Michael Rappaport to Direct A Tribe Called Quest Documentary

As featured on CentricTV.com-- When A Tribe Called Quest called it quits more than a decade ago it was truly the end of an era in hip-hop music. Tribe remains one of the most innovative and memorable groups who etched themselves in the hearts and heads of fans with beats and lyrics that didn’t denigrate but uplifted with consistency. And those very infectious traits are what convinced New York actor and die hard tribe fan Michael Rappaport (Zebrahead, Higher Learning) to make a documentary on the group.

Back in ’08, XXLMag.com spoke with former group frontman Q-Tip about the project. “I think this is gonna be the first motion picture documentary done on a hip-hop group, which is an honor,” he said. “…Nas spoke to me a while ago and was like, ‘I want to shoot a documentary on you dudes.’ Michael Rapaport saw us perform in LA and said the same thing, so they combined forces. They basically are shooting it. They got backstage footage. They got old archive stuff. They’ve been interviewing everybody.”

The documentary tentatively titled, "Beats, Rhymes and Life" has been the buzz for at least two years now but Rapaport says it is being edited now and will premiere at Sundance in 2011. The film will cover the group’s beginning, break up, reunion tour and possible future. Rappaport told thehundreds.com  that he is extremely passionate about this project and that the group is worthy of such recognition, “All the rock groups of the sixties have been documented, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Doors, Hendrix, The Stones, The Eagles and as far as I’m concerned A Tribe Called Quest is that for us.”
