Stay Tuned for Some NEW Additions!!

Over the past few weeks I have gotten some requests and suggestions to add to the site, so stay tuned for some NEW STUFF!!! I am kind of anxious too, so make sure you check it out!

Rewind Wednesday: Lean On Me

Considering all the violence that is going down in our schools, I felt compelled to feature this film for Rewind Wednesday.

Lean on Me is a 1989 biographical-drama film written by Michael Schiffer, directed by John G. Avildsen and starring Morgan Freeman. Lean on Me is loosely based on the story of Joe Clark, a real life inner city high school principal in Paterson, New Jersey, whose school is at risk of being taken over by the New Jersey state government unless students improve their test scores.

Interestingly enough, Morgan Freeman spent a great deal of time with Clark, so that he could capture his mannerisms and sayings. Clark resigned as principal of Eastside High School the year after this film was released to become an author and motivational speaker.

When it all boils down, Morgan Freeman's performance is the real reason to see this film. He's helped by a solid supporting cast, leading to some truly memorable scenes as principal Joe Clark battles teachers, parents, and administrators who are outraged by his controversial methods. Morgan Freeman is pretty much at his highest potential in this drama, his performance is excellent.

This film does a great job of showing the audience the plight of the inner city during the 1980's. Many of the issues then, still ring true in our school today. All of the other characters in the film are also portrayed by fine dramatic performances. From the music teacher, to the Asst. Princpal characters , all of them show believability and a multifacted dynamic to each personailty. This is one of those films that I highly recommend to everyone, as its message spans across many areas. Teachers and those in the education field, especially supervisors, should especially take advantage after watching this film.

Check out these clips from the movie:

Powerful Song...

Priceless leadership...

Did you know?....

-Joe Clark is the father of Olympic track athletes Joetta Clark-Diggs and Hazel Clark, and the father-in-law of Olympic track athlete Jearl Miles Clark.

-In the auditorium scene where Freeman's character expels the students on stage, a young Michael Imperioli (of The Sopranos) can be seen behind him.

-Beverly Todd (who plays Mrs. Levias in this movie) reunites with Morgan Freeman 18 years later, playing the role of his wife in the 2007 movie, The Bucket List.

"Barbie" is headed for the BIG SCREEN!!

I can remember as a young child playing with my many Barbie dolls, but never did I imagine they would come to life on the movie screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, after months of negotiations, Universal has acquired the rights to the iconic Mattel toy to make a live-action feature. Hollywood screens are usually populated by Barbies, but now the real Barbie is on her way to the big screen.

Laurence Mark, whose credits include Jerry Maguire and Julie & Julia, is producing.

Barbie, celebrating her 50th anniversary as one of the top toy brands in the world, has never been adapted into a live-action film, though not for Hollywood's lack of trying. Mattel has been extremely protective of the toy, which has generated billions of dollars, wanting nothing to tarnish the polished image. Columbia has entered into negotiations to pick up He-Man, another Mattel property.

It is unclear how the toy will translate. Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts; is sometimes a high school teen, but at times a pilot, military officer, teacher or astronaut; drives a slew of cars; dates a man named Ken; and has friends straight out of a United Colors of Benetton ad.

A couple names have been thrown around to see who would play the live-action Barbie some of these include, Anna Faris, Zoe Saldana, Heather Graham, Blake Lively, and Taylor Swift. This should be real interesting how this turns out. I can just see it now, the theaters packed with hyper, little girls.

Rewind Wednesday: Harlem Nights

Well today is a special day and I wanted to give a personal shout-out to my Aunt Gloria who is celebrating her birthday today! This Rewind Wednesday is for you!!! Harlem Nights!!

Now she is probably wondering why I pick this one, but I think it fits! This 1989 comedy-drama starred Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, and other notables such as Danny Aiello, Redd Foxx, and Della Reese.

This is one of those movies that you either REALLY like or REALLY hate, there is really no in between. For the time period that it came out and the directing done by Eddie Murphy, it was a pretty decent job. Harlem Nights is a great that stars the funniest three black comics to ever grace a comdey stage. Eddie Murphy was pretty smart, and probably knew what he was doing when he decided to cast Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor and a host of other well-known comedians to fill the roles. Harlem Nights is one of those films that has great one-liners, plenty of action, and amusing fight scenes. Many have commented on the violence and profanities in this movie. But just think about the era that it took place in, it was only necessary. And the movie is still funny! And without a doubt the two most hilarious scenes are Eddie Murphy's fistfight with Della Reese, and his shootout with Arsenio Hall. (Still laughing to this day!!) Now the critics can say what they will about Eddie Murphy, but he still cracks you up!

Much to many surprise, Harlem Nights was a critical failure, but a financial success, grossing 3 1/2 times the amount it cost to make it (worldwide) and is well known for starring three generations of black comedians (Foxx, Pryor, and Murphy).

And for your entertainment....Priceless scenes...
This is probably one of the most funniest scenes...The Shootout!

It's Raining Food!!

Inspired by Ron and Judi Barrett's beloved children's book of the same name, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS follows inventor Flint Lockwood and brainy weathergirl Sam Sparks as they attempt to discover why the rain in their small town has stopped while food is falling in its place. Meanwhile, lifelong bully Brent relishes in tormenting Flint just as he did when they were kids, and Mayor Shelbourne schemes to use Flint's latest invention--a device designed to improve everyone's lives--for his own personal gain.

The film features the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Bruce Campbell, James Caan, Bobb'e J. Thompson, Andy Samberg, Mr. T, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Al Roker, Lauren Graham, and Will Forte.

Well from the preview it looked pretty entertaining, but it ended up being just an "ok" movie. Nothing to shout about, just some good laughs for entertainment sake. These days I guess it is the new trend to transform children's books into film. And knowing this it makes you wonder how they were able to turn in a "slim little book" into a feature film, well they did somehow.

One thing that did give it some points was that it put a true effort to make it appealing to both kids and adults. In my opinion maybe if it was more for the child it might have turned out better. I will say this I'm sure the book will be flying off of bookshelves since the movie has come out.

I will say this, I definitely had to go get something to eat afterwards, one could get kind of hungry after watching a film like this one. LOL

Throwback Thursday: Purple Rain

Now you know normally I have a Rewind Wednesday but I got so caught up yesterday it just flew right past me. But fret not I got one for you today....now this one may be a little different than your normal flick but its a classic...the 1984 musical film Purple Rain.

"The Kid" (Prince) is an aspiring and talented, but troubled Minneapolis musician with a difficult home life. He meets a singer named Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero), and they become involved in an untidy romance. The plot centers on Prince trying not to repeat the pattern of his abusive alcoholic father, played by Clarence Williams III (famous at the time for his role as Lincoln Hayes on The Mod Squad), and keep his band, The Revolution, and his relationship with Apollonia, together. His main antagonist is fellow musician Morris Day and his group The Time.

I can honestly say this is one of the greatest musicals of ALL TIME, and it is definitely in the Top 5 in my book. This was one of those films that accented the 80's and made it truly shine (BLING!). The film pretty much gives an almost perfect snapshot of the neon light and skinny tie era… but then you realize that it was made during the time of curly perms and tinny synths, wow...I hope we don't ever revisit that era...lol. Prince truly exemplified an award-winning film with Oscar-winning music, and it would take him to his zenith. On a flip side it's somewhat saddening to realize that even though he would make some fine albums, I don't think he would ever capture this high again. Nonetheless, many people overlook this film and miss out on all the passion that is housed inside of it.

*Did You Know?
The movie idea was apparently developed by Prince during his "Triple Threat" tour. Initially the script was to be darker and more coherent. Prince intended to cast Vanity, leader of the girl group Vanity 6, but she left the group before filming began. Her role was initially offered to Jennifer Beals (who turned it down because she wanted to concentrate on college) before going to Apollonia Kotero, a virtual unknown at the time. Excluding Prince and his on-screen parents, almost every actor in the movie uses his/her actual name for his/her character.

The film would earn $68.4 million in the US (2009 dollars US$140,017,340) at the box office. To this day when it comes on tv, I can't help but to watch it. It would also win an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score in 1985. Thus also resulting in a soundtrack that sold over 14 million copies in America alone.

Purple Rain evokes an eighties style clothing, and music ensemble, which effortlessly captivated the movie audience!! Put it like this Purple Rain put Prince on the map!!

Harrison Ford seems ready for Indiana Jones 5...

Well it seems as though Harrison Ford is ready for another Indiana Jones adventure. According to HollyScoop, he's not quite ready to hand over the reigns to Shia LaBeouf. It has been said that Ford is getting ready for the fifth installment of this franchise.

Ford recently announced he’ll be bringing Indy back for a fifth time, as long as he’s ok with the script. After the worldwide success of 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harrison figured to give it a go one more time. He’s been at it for 20 years, so why stop now? He tells Fox News, "The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form....Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I'll be very happy to put the costume on again.”

Steven Spielberg will direct the upcoming project.

Now I was a bit skeptical with the last 'Indiana' film, but maybe he can redeem himself with the fifth one. What do you think?

Another Lesson Learned...

Another lesson has been taught in the newest Tyler Perry film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself. And with this one I can truly appreciate the message that was being delivered.

Throughout this film I had chills all over, partly do to the fact that it was grounded with such a spiritual foundation. Perry has an unique way of combining the new with the old (seasoned) and this film continues with that legacy.

Gladys Knight and Pastor Marvin Winans do an EXCELLENT job with their acting and especially their singing. Their roles seemed almost effortless from beginning to end. Ms. Tariji (April) gives us another great role, she is able to give us the "angry black woman" and then turn it off and give us the soft, sensitive side. It is also comforting to see the great character chemistry between her and co-star Adam Rodriguez (Sandino) you can't help but feel it. And we can't forget the sneak in performance of R&B queen Mary J. Blige.

In this movie, there are definite parts that are meant to be funny, were really funny and parts that were meant to be serious, were really serious; all in all it truly reflects the Black experience. I would definitely say I got my money's worth. You can't help but want to reach out an grab every child you know and hold them for an eternity after watching this movie. You can't help but tell the one's that you love how much you appreciate them. Cherish every moment!!

I must admit there is something about Tyler Perry's stage plays turned to film/movies, maybe it's just me but I think they are somewhat made for the non-thinkers. When I say this I am meaning there are many things that occur in this film that have obvious solutions and/or ramifications. BUT, please note they may not necessarily be a bad thing its just that some people may see one thing and others may see another. Even with all of that said, I will say this is one of his better films that is previously a stage play. It stuck to the original story with very few minor deviations.

Overall, the acting, writing and directing was on point. Tyler definitely got several messages through this movie. Whether it was about an aunt's selfishness and stunted capability to love and express that love.... Or about child molestation and how we can sometimes turn a blind eye toward it.... Message about loving without requiring ulterior motives... And about faith in God. It definitely will get your soul-stirring...

High Action For Ya!!

If you remember watching Crank and telling yourself this looks very familiar then you are right on the money, Lakeshore Entertainment re-teamed with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the creators of Crank to bring to you the science-fiction, action thriller Gamer. Now another thing I noticed was that this film seriously reminded me of Death Race (2008), considering that came out about this same time last year. I had to come in with an objective mindset, so that I would not end up comparing the two. However, that was a bit difficult.

Now don't get me wrong, I like Gerard Butler ever since 300, partly because he is able to play any role, but his one should have been left on the side. It just does not seem as though there is a great effort placed in this role. one thing I will say is that the directors and producers definitely know how to incorporate the music and action if nothing else. One might think that this movie rides a fine line similar to that of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Running Man, although it does somewhat stand on its own.

The film to a certain degree rushes itself, eventually slowing down to a decent pace at the end, presenting an ending that is very fitting and entertaining. The interesting thing is that the film does do a good job of creating a world that could potentially exist. No matter how disturbing some elements in the film may be, they seem to have an air of truth, which elevates this film to a "just-above-average" rating.

Gamer is one of those films that you might lose a little interest in the beginning, but midway through you will be more engaged. All in all, there is plenty of action to keep you entertained just not sure if it is truly noteworthy.

In the end, you may bring yourself to wonder this simple thought, when playing online games, who hides behind the characters?

Rewind Wednesday: Crimson Tide

Today's Rewind Wednesday is that of the 1995 submarine film directed by Tony Scott, starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, Crimson Tide.

The film takes place in 1995 (from several references made by the story) during a period of instability in Russia. Units of the Russian military loyal to an ultranationalist has taken control of a nuclear missile installation and is threatening nuclear war if either the American or the Russian government attempts to confront him.

Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington gave awesome performances, and their growing tension towards each other is enough to keep the excitement at a consistent high through the last half of the film. This is one of those films that does a perfect job of keeping your attention from beginning to end. This movie came out during a time when movies truly had all the right elements to make a great film. One thing that the movie does is to set the message at the very start of the film providing the perfect tone. And in a sort of twisted way the whole film is somewhat scary in the fact that it makes us wonder what if this situation did happen like this, and how could the military establish proper operating procedures for it. However, at the end of the film some hope is established.

The film is based on the premise that, at the time, U.S. submarine commanders were authorized to launch missiles on their own initiative if they could not communicate with the President of the United States after the order to arm the missiles was received. At about this time, the procedure was changed so that missiles could only be launched if a direct order from the Commander-in-Chief was received, even if communications had been broken off in the meantime, via the use of permissive action links. This matched Russian policy on submarine-based missile launches, which had always required direct orders to launch. Although the film does not claim to be based on a true story, events that transpire throughout the plot are strikingly similar to one of the most tense periods of the Cuban Missile Crisis, only the roles of the Americans and Soviets are reversed.

According to Guts and Glory..., the U.S. Navy objected to many of the elements in the script — particularly the aspect of mutiny on board a U.S. ship — and as such, the film was produced without the assistance of the U.S. Navy.

Little known fact: There was additional uncredited writing by Quentin Tarantino.

Here is some more footage between Washington and Hackman probably one of the most pivotal scenes of the movie:

Rewind Wednesday: Devil in a Blue Dress

"A man once told me that you step out of your door in the morning, and you are already in trouble. The only question is are you on top of that trouble or not?"

The year is 1948, the place is Los Angeles, and Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins (Denzel Washington) is a black man who has just lost his job and is in dire need of money. So, despite having no experience as a private eye, Easy accepts an assignment from a seedy man (Tom Sizemore) to find the missing Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals), the mistress of a powerful mayoral candidate. As Rawlins conducts his search, he unexpectedly becomes drawn into a complex racially-charged web of intrigue involving political machinations, double-crossings, blackmail, and mysterious deaths. With the aid of his trigger-happy friend Mouse (Don Cheadle), Easy must rely on his instincts and neophyte detective skills, not only to solve the case, but also to save his life. African-American director Carl Franklin (ONE FALSE MOVE) brings Walter Mosley's crime series to life with this dense thriller, aided greatly by Tak Fujimoto's sun-soaked photography and an electric soundtrack reflecting the music of the times. As Easy Rawlins, an everyman who finds himself an unwilling pawn in a dangerous game of mystery and murder, Washington delivers an intense performance. It is Don Cheadle, however, who steals the show, giving his hot-tempered Mouse a comic humanity that is at once menacing, hysterical, and unforgettable.

This was one of those films that grabs your attention in many ways whether its the acting, the cinematography, or the plot itself. I was a huge fan of the book, so I expected the same from the movie. Some have even said, "in the aftermath of the Oscars, it now seems clear that Devil in a Blue Dress was one of the best films of 1995. "

Many critics applauded Don Cheadle's performance. Jerry Renshaw said, "Cheadle steals every scene where he appears as Mouse..." And to think this is where Cheadle's journey would begin with key roles such as this one. He surprised us with his performance and that is a true delight.

Devil in a Blue Dress was an incredible film that definitely became one of the most under-rated films in 1995. Director, Carl Franklin's adaptation does true justice to this exciting novel he might want to consider another one of Mosely's stories. (Just a thought...) "Overall this is a solidly enjoyable detective story with all the twists and turns that you could expect from that genre. However it also benefits from a great sense of place and time that is all though the film – not merely painted on with sets or soundtrack. A class act from Washington and others just adds to the feeling of quality. "

Some background info:

*Carl Franklin wrote and directed the neo-noir because he liked Walter Mosley's novel. (Walter Mosley served as an associate producer in the film.) He thought the work was more than a detective story. Franklin says author Mosley was able to transform an everyday guy into a detective. In the editing process Franklin had to cut a steamy love scene between Beals and Washington because he believed the scene wasn't needed to convey the story.

Can you see Iron Man as a Disney Character now?!!

According to the Associated Press, The Walt Disney Co. is buying Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing such characters as Iron Man and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and WALL-E.

Under the deal, which was announced Monday (8/31)and is expected to close by the end of the year, Disney will acquire the rights to 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee. Disney said the boards of both companies have approved the transaction, but it will require an antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said Marvel's comic books, TV shows, movies and video games amounted to "a treasure trove of content."

Although it began producing its own movies, starting with Iron Man last year, Marvel has several deals with other movie studios that Disney said it will honor and re-examine upon expiration. For example, Spider-Man 4, set for release in 2011, is being made with Sony Corp.'s Columbia Pictures; Iron Man 2 will be distributed by Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures next year; and the upcoming X-Men Origins: Magneto and X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, both due in 2011, are to be distributed by News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox.

"The acquisition of Marvel offers us a similar opportunity to advance our strategy," Iger said, and "to build a business that is stronger than the sum of its parts."

Now I am not too sure how I feel about this, I kind a got some mixed emotions on this one here....hmmmm...

For all my Boxing Fans!!

It has been over three decades since boxing was featured in movie theaters, and now it is coming back in HIGH DEFINITION too!! And of course, the main feature will be that of the September 19 welterweight championship bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez, this was announced on 8/31/2009.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, more than 170 screens will have the fight and its undercard from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Among the circuits participating are AMC, Cinemark, Cobb, Kerasotes, Malco, Marcus, National Amusements and Regal. Thirty-second previews for the bout, much like film trailers, will be shown on about 1,500 screens during the next several weeks.

Tickets for the fight are expected to be about $15; the bout also will air on HBO PPV.

The 'Mayweather-Marquez' matchup will mark the first boxing event in movie theaters since the famous "No Mas Fight" between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran in November 1980. The first match shown across the U.S. in theaters was Joe Louis vs. Lee Savold in June 1951.

This might need to be the last one...

Now don't get me wrong the Final Destination franchise was one that I was very interested in and made sure that I saw each and every one. However, with this one I was somewhat disappointed with the fourth installment. For me I could really care less if it is in 3D or not, that's pretty much a bonus that I could do with out. Grant it there was A LOT of hype surrounding this movie and to a degree it performed but on the other hand it was not all that GRAND!! When it comes to a movie like this you do expect acting you just expect a good action & horror flick, especially horror.

I will be honest with you there is not much into reviewing this flick except the fact that the 3D was pretty cool, but that is it!! It was not as impressive as I anticipated, and that makes it very disappointing. Even though a plot is not expected you still want something worth paying your money for in the long-run. I kinda of hope that this is the final one, because it struggled to stay on the brain.

This is one of those franchises that could have done extremely well if it stuck with ONE director instead of switching midstream and then going back. And its obvious because one can tell that the first and third (directed by James Wong) were way better than the second and fourth (directed by James Ellis).

Now another complaint I had was that it was far too short for a film like this, 80 minutes is not going to cut it when you are dealing with a horror flick. That pretty much teases the audience and gets them all excited ...AND then the major let-down. I would also advise you to not watch the previews too much, in this instance it taks away from the film...trust me the surprises are gone but you can at least act like you would be suprised.

Well we shall see what happens from this point but hopefully the right decision will be made if any future endeavors are in the works.

Bad Boys 3 is Planned...But No Smith or Lawrence yet...

I had always enjoyed the Bad Boys series so when I heard the news of a possible third installment, I kinda got a little excited. And notice I say a little because director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have not yet confirmed. And when it boils down all four of them are the key elements to making another successful Bad Boys film!

All parties have expressed a willingness to return if a story can be hammered out, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The first "Boys," released in 1995, helped launch Bay as a director and Smith as an action star. Even though it was not considered a blockbuster, it grossed $66 million domestically and $141 million worldwide. The sequel, released in 2003 when Bay and Smith's stars had risen, grossed $138 million domestically and $273 million worldwide.
