Rewind Wednesday: Benny & Joon

Well today's Rewind Wednesday brings me back to my days in middle school at Jefferson M.S. in Champaign, IL.

Benny & Joon is a 1993 romantic comedy about how two misfits, Sam (Johnny Depp) and Juniper/Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), find each other and fall in love. The film would perhaps showcase Depp's humorous physical comedy routines and also popularize the U.S. song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers.

When watching this film you begin to understand the meaning of love, and that no matter who you are you can still have it. Regardless of your personality or who you are in society, to just be able to be carefree about life sometimes make things so much easier.

In Benny & Joon we are able to see another side of many of the charcters, especially Johnny Depp which to a degree is unexpected. A more softer side is shown through his character of Sam. This movie shows a very sweet, innocent side of him which is rarely seen elsewhere. Even Aidan Quinn was just right in his role of Benny, restrained and compassionate, with just the right amount of yearning to be free. All in all, it seemed that each actor/actress was able to play their role to no avail.

This is one of those movies that just makes you feel good inside and out. A true sweet and heartwarming tale of love. And in addition to that, it would have such a priceless ending with Benny going over to Ruthies with an armful of roses, and Joon and Sam in their apartment together making grilled cheese sandwiches with a clothes iron.
