New Poster & Trailer Alert 'Night Catches Us'

After playing in numerous festivals, Magnolia Pictures finally released an official trailer to 'Night Catches Us'.

Directed by Tanya Hamilton, the film stars Kerry Washington, Anthony Mackie, Jamie Hector, Wendell Pierce, and Novella Nelson.

In 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus (Anthony Mackie, The Hurt Locker) returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia (Kerry Washington, Ray, Lift) and her daughter. However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone's beliefs as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.

The film exposes the realities of African American life during the final days of the Black Power Movement, as potluck suppers, run-ins with the authorities and lingering radicalism threaten to set off a neighborhood teetering on the edge.

Hamilton also features an intense soundtrack (by The Roots) and moving archival footage bring to life the history of black resistance.

It hit theaters on Dec.3rd, 2010.

Viola Davis to star as Shirley Chisholm!!

You can't beat having an Oscar nomination (Doubt), a second Tony award (Fences), and starring roles in some high profiled films, until you grab that role of a lifetime. Currently actress Viola Davis is being courted to star in the biopic role of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress and the first major-party black candidate for President of the United States.
The New York Daily News states that producers Bryan Gambogi and Grant Anderson of Creative-Monster Productions are bringing the life of Brooklyn Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm to the silver screen - and they want Davis to play the lead role.

The yet-to-be-titled feature, which is being written by Camille Thomasson, will tell the story of Chisholm's rise to become the first black woman to serve in Congress, as well as her historic 1972 run for the White House. "Chisholm was a riveting politico," Gambogi says. "I've been watching vintage TV clips and am enthralled by her presence and eloquence."

The South Carolina native will next star in DreamWorks Studios bigscreen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel The Help.

'Waiting for Superman' won't fly with some audiences

Every now and then I like to showcase film reviews from other intelligent individuals, because there review pretty much "hits the nail on the head"!! This review is submitted by a good friend of mine R. L'Heureux Lewis. And hopefully after reading this article/review you wilh have another perspective of today's education system.

In this film publicity image released by Paramount Pictures, Geoffrey Canada, standing, is shown in a scene from, "Waiting for 'Superman'." (AP Photo/Paramount Pictures)

'Waiting for Superman' won't fly with some audiences

Waiting for Superman is a powerful film about educational reform and the potential of our schools from the same team that brought us by director Davis Guggenheim and producer Lesley Chilcott, the Academy Award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Unfortunately the filmmakers leave the audience hoping for a change that is as likely as a caped crusader appearing in real life.

While the film taps into the concerns that many of us have towards a failing educational system, it fails to provide a full portrait of what is really happening in the nation's schools. If you're interested in heart wrenching stories, see this film. But if you are interested in changing education make sure you bring your x-ray vision so you can see beyond the veil of what the filmmakers are advocating.

The film opens with an interview of Anthony, a young black boy enrolled in a Washington, D.C. school. We learn that Anthony's father died years earlier from a possible drug overdose and his grandmother is now raising him in a poverty stricken neighborhood. With poise he answers math questions and in his eyes you see the glimmer of potential and high educational hopes. Unfortunately Anthony is slotted to attend a failing middle school that feeds into a high school nationally known as a "dropout factory" where 40 percent of students fail to graduate. This is an all too common reality many black, brown and poor students in the United States.
The happy ending to this story is to come by Anthony being rescued by an innovative new D.C. charter boarding school. The catch is that this salvation is only available to a few via a lottery. The lottery exists because when more people enroll in charter school than they can accommodate they must use a lottery system to determine admission. Guggenheim and filmmakers lament this point and stress "we know what works" but we leave success up to chance for our young people.

The story of Anthony and the other families that are followed are touching but do not tell the full reality of schooling, particularly in charter schools. Behind the heart tugging narrative lies an inconvenient truth, that charter schools on average actually perform no better than traditional public schools and often perform worse! In the nearly two-hour film this reality is tucked in a sound bite where the film confesses only 1 in 5 charter schools is excelling. Yes, you read that right, 80 percent of charter schools do no better or fare worse than traditional public schools. It is clear this research finding does not deter the filmmakers, but viewers should not be so quick to skip it. The Stanford's CREDO National Charter School Study has done the most comprehensive work on charter schools and found that they are far from a cure all for educational woes.

Waiting for Superman spares no punches as educational administrators and authors take shot after shot at blaming teacher unions for blocking educational reform. Jonathan Alter of Newsweek sums up a message the film is trying to get across, "Teachers are great, a national treasure. Teachers' unions are, generally speaking, a menace and an impediment to reform." The villains of the families are made clear when the presidents of the American Federation for Teachers and National Education Association enter the screen and ominous music forecasts their discussion of securing teacher's jobs which is equated to sabotaging masses of children who will be saddled with poor quality teachers.

Repeatedly we are reminded that the United States ranked 15th in reading and 24th in math in comparison to other developed nations. The answer to this dilemma is to free up our schools from the albatross of teacher unions and bureaucratic red tape. Sounds good, right? The only problem is that nearly every country that ranks above the US enjoys a unionized teaching force.

Unions cannot and should not be the scapegoats for educational failure. Beyond challenging unions, the film advocates for are evaluating teachers and a curriculum that guarantees college readiness, both of which are becoming increasingly common in public schools. Faster than a speeding bullet, Waiting for Superman ignores those realities to tell viewers that problems schools face are complex but successful reform is simple.
H. L. Mencken once said, "For every complex problem there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong."

The solutions offered to educational problems offered by Waiting for Superman fall into this trap. There is no magic bullet to repairing our schools; it will take a wide variety of schools, reformers, and communities. While we can all agree that education needs to be reformed, we cannot place our faith in a smidge of successful schools that cannot accommodate all children and have not demonstrated repeated success. We also cannot ignore the more numerous charter schools that do worse than the traditional public schools we already have. Doing so would be no different than waiting for a man in a cape and tights to save us.

Be on the Lookout...

Here is a new short film that is bound to get some buzz. "This Time" is the directorial debut of up and coming black director Matthew Cherry, and stars Reagan Gomez-Preston, Terri J. Vaughn, Michael Moss and Sinorice Moss from the NY Giants .

Written by Reagan Gomez, Matthew says the film is a labor of love for both he and Reagan as both have family members that were deployed overseas.  They wanted to do something that spoke to family members that have troops coming home from the war.

The film has been accepted at ten different film festivals, including Boston International, Hawaii International, Martha's Vineyard and the San Francisco Black Film Festival.

The film centers around Reagan's character who, the night before her wedding, runs into an ex-boyfriend whom she still loves.  Having just returned home from the war on terror, the ex-boyfriend makes it clear that he still loves Reagan.  She now must make a difficult choice between her two loves.

And for your viewing pleasure, here's the film (please note this is not a snippet, it's the entire film):

This just in...Kate Beckinsale to return for Underworld 4

This just in...

Looks as though Kate Beckinsale is returning to the world of vampires and werewolves, closing a deal to reprise her role as vampire heroine Selene in the fourth installment of the "Underworld" movie series (according to the Hollywood Reporter) after skipping the third one last year.

Currently the film is in search for a director as well as an actress to portray Selene's daughter. Production on the Lakeshore/Screen Gems project is set to start next March in Vancouver.

As you may remember, the first Underworld, released in 2003, launched a profitable franchise that has grossed more than $300 million worldwide, with the movies each costing less than $35 million to make.

The British actress returned for the sequel, 2006's Underworld: Evolution but did not take part in 2009's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, which starred Rhona Mitra.

I have always enjoyed this series, so I must say I am pretty excited about this upcoming film project.

The Town...Shockingly Pretty Good

A tale of four men -- thieves, rivals and friends -- being hunted through the streets of Charlestown by a tenacious FBI agent and a woman who might destroy them all.

Once again I was given the opportunity to catch a screening and tonight's feature is that of the upcoming robbery flick The Town (based on Chuck Hogan's book "Prince of Thieves: A Novel".) Now I know everyone does not really care too much for Ben Affleck as an actor, however in this case he somewhat redeemed himself.

Huge KUDOS goes to Affleck for his directing skills, he definitely put his foot in this one, so much that the movie is already receiving international attention (well deserved). "Welcome to the bank robbery capital of America. " The story does a good job tracing the exploits of 4 Irish bank robbers in Boston who symbolizes the criminal working class growing up in Charlestown. Although not considered an action film it does contain many  action packed heist scenes especially, the last and robbery.

I must commend the movie on not trying to WOW the viewer with an alternative style of bank robbery. (Thank you!) It just gives it to you raw and edgy, and that just makes the movie even better! Had this been just focused on the idea of the bank robbery we would forget everything that surrounds and leads up to that. With an enticing plot this also brings attention to another huge factor in this film and that is of the acting. It is quite visible that everyone came with complete confidence to "play ball" in this one.

Mad Men's John Hamm plays the role of a hard-driving FBI agent who appears to have this case locked up but does he really? I loved the cat and mouse interaction between him, Doug MacRay (Affleck) and Claire (Rebecca Hall) an innocent yet trusting victim. Hamm just gives his 100% and it is clearly evident. He does an excellent job of playing the opposite of Affleck. And lest I not forget, Hall does an excellent job of portraying a woman (victim) who has to deal with hardships, her torment and anguish. I admired the fact that she was daring to do what she felt was right for her and not necessarily trying to please anyone else.

Now at a certain point the movie takes a dark turn, and the writing really begins to shine bright and the action begins to get bloodier! The film approaches its apex, while at the same time keeping you on the edge wondering what's the next move...who's going down?!

There is just something about this movie that gives off a smooth, flow, but with a hard interior. A good majority of this movie reads OSCAR (Screenplay, Writing, Director, Film). And everything about this movies reads "brutal & ripping". Without a shadow of doubt this is a great movie to see. The film definitely lives up to its hype, a feat that so few films have done, besides Avatar and Inception.

Teaser Trailer Alert: "The Inheritance"

Robert O'Hara is making his directorial debut with teaser trailer to The Inheritance. The film is produced by Effie T. Brown and her production company, Duly Noted Inc.

Five cousins find out about a centuries old family ritual of sacrifice to an African spirit and must fight for their lives or take their place in a long line of offered souls.

The story centers on family friends (played by Golden Brooks, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Rochelle Aytes, Shawn Michael Howard, and D.B. Woodside) who gather during a winter storm for a 'secret' reunion at the family estate. The connection to their tortured history is one of only passing fascination. The reunion turns deadly when the elders have to make good on an ancient pact with a spirit of an ancestor. Now, it's this generation's turn to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is their duty and their destiny, but they won't give up without a fight to survive.

Also starring in the film are Keith David, Novella Nelson, Adriane Lenox, Andre De Shields, and Lanre Idewu.

The film was previously known as My Place in the Horror.

Machete

Before I break the ice and get into this review, you should know Machete is an PRIME example of an exploitation film and was definitely advertised as such. By definition, and exploitation film will include excessive violence, gore, nudity, and be high on intentional corny lines while low on plot devices and character development. This film personifies all of the facets that a 1970s blaxploitation film would have, except with the Hispanic culture.

It is pretty much an expansion of a fake trailer that was released together with Rodriguez' and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 Grindhouse. As a big fan of Robert Rodriguez films I must say that this is one of his best films to date. Its pretty much neck and neck with his 2005 hit Sin City. Machete does what a good film needs to do, it keeps a simple plot with some top notch acting. The story revolves around an immigrant, Machete (Danny Trejo), a former Mexican Federale turned renegade. After a shakedown with a druglord (Steven Segal), Machete roams Texas looking to do yard work in exchange for money.

One thing is for certain Danny Trejo is the star player who is finally getting his due as a lead. For all those familiar with him, know that Trejo was pretty much a bad-ass who made appearances never the leading role, until now. He proves with this film that he is very much capable of holding up on his own. Age never stopped anybody, definitely not in his case.

In addition, to him  I personally was intrigued and surprised at the same time the effort or lack there of Lindsay Lohan's character. Considering she really only has 10-15 minutes of screen time (primarily undressed), her character performs perfectly and flawlessly. In a weird twisted way the role almost appears as though it was written specifically for her (Kudos for stepping up and taking on such a mature role.) This was a great movie for filmmakers and audiences to have an opportunity to see her showcase that talent.

The whole cast in general is a sight to see. Rodriguez pulled the stops with this one including everyone from Steven Segal, Don Johnson, Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, and several others. We as audience members get an opportunity see a good mix of actors play roles that may not be expected of them. Rodriguez and Trejo should be commended on how fantastic the role of Machete was played out on the screen. To think at the current age of 66, the action Trejo does is damn near phenomenal. Machete is grand, illustration type of  character who always gets the one-up on the bad guys and the good love of the ladies, and you can just sense that Trejo is loving every moment of it. Thankfully we are too.

Machete is the perfect film to conclude the summer blockbusters of 2010.

The American...For the mature crowd

Do not let the trailers fool you...

This is definitely not a movie full of action and excitement. It is more so a mellow thriller (if there is such a thing). Another warning is that if you are expecting to watch a Jason Bourne or James Bond-style of movie  then The American is not the movie for you. However, even with those factors not being involved I would still recommend it.

It can be noted that the advertising campaign and production photographs might give the impression that George Clooney is taking on a role in a movie similar to that of Liam Neeson did in that remarkable thriller Taken (2008).

Since this is not really an action picture and not really even a thriller it is what one may call a transfixing character study. After watching the film, one will learn not so much about George Clooney character's history, but more the integrity of him as a human being.

This film is what one might consider an exercise in the polarization of the audience. Its style of delivery is defintely one that you cannot forget.

The fact that Clooney does not have that much dialog actually has the audience reading his body language more and not expecting his words. He does so much more with his eyebrows as he does his mouth. While Clooney could have easily beat the audience into submission with plot points, instead the delivery is below the surface. As the saying goes "Actions really do speak louder than words" and this movie is great place to showcase this phenomenon. Edward (Clooney) can't be sure of whom he can trust and his exchanges reflect this perfectly and the audience has to stay sharp in order to interpret his actions.

Once again this is not your typical "shoot-em-up" style hit-man movie, but more a view of an introspective and introverted nature of the main character. Put it like this, some movies simply aren't meant for everyone, and that's ok with me.

All in all, the casual viewer will probably want to wait for the Red Box on this one, however maybe they just might have a change of heart. The American can be considered a high art film that will leave you appreciating the technique, and then perhaps maybe this film will be more to your liking.

Early November release for Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls'

It has been recently reported that Lionsgate will release 'Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls... on Nov. 5, 2010 instead of its original launch date during Martin Luther King weekend in (January) 2011.

With an earlier release date it would put the film in time for year-end awards consideration, and also continues Perry's streak of releasing at least one film per year since 2005.

"It's a serious film that really lends itself to the fall period. From talking with exhibitors, I know they're really excited to have another Tyler Perry film this year," said Lionsgate's executive vice-president and general sales manager David Spitz.

Competing against the film on November 5 will be the Paramount-DreamWorks Animation's 3D toon Megamind, starring Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Brad Pitt and Warner Bros.' Todd Phillips-directed Due Date, with Robert Downey, Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan, and Jaime Foxx.

Paula Patton to star in new Mission Impossible Film

Well the new mommy Paula Patton seems to be getting back on the good foot with her acting career. Patton is set to be cast in the new 'Mission: Impossible' movie.

Now this is truly a big accomplishment, considering Patton who is said to have beaten out many Hollywood actresses to star as a young operative working with Tom Cruise.

Patton and Cruise join returning actors Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg along with new-to-the-franchise actor Jeremy Renner. The cameras start rolling this fall.

Mission: Impossible is planned for a December 16, 2011 release.

2010 Summer movie-ticket sales fall below 2009*

According to the recent report in The Hollywood Reporter, Summer 2010 won't set a box-office high considering a 6% fall in movie ticket sales from 2009.

Hollywood hasn't marked a new summer admissions high since 2004, when 642 million tickets were sold, according to the National Association of Theater Owners.

Among notable genre trends, family films marked a string of successes this summer, and Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3  was the season's biggest grosser at $406 million. But a still-low installed base of 3D cinemas kept some pics from securing even 2,000 3D engagements. Exhibitors have been busily equipping auditoriums for 3D since financing for systems started to flow this year, but a steady increase in the number of 3D releases means demand for 3D screens will continue to outstrip distributor demand for some time

"Almost every film that's come out in 3D has run into the prospect of losing screens earlier than it would have if there weren't such a competition for 3D screens," NATO spokesman Patrick Corcoran said Tuesday. "There aren't enough 3D screens to support more than 1-1/2 major 3D releases at a time."

Summer 2010 produced 11 films that rang up more than $100 million apiece, three fewer than last year. That simply means there were too few attractive films in the market, Corcoran suggested. "There's been too much emphasis on the increase in ticket prices," he said. "It's too quick and easy to point to ticket prices and say that's the reason a summer does better or worse. The difference in almost any year is how attractive the movies are to an audience."

But, as usual, the summer triggered a few likely franchises. Sony's Angelina Jolie star Salt looks likely to produce a second tale of CIA intrigue -- with the first ringing up a nifty $113 million and counting in sales -- and the studio's buddy-cop actioner The Other Guys also could book a sequel after crossing $100 million domestically. This should be interesting...

Universal's 3D animated feature Despicable Me will get a sequel after the family outing fetched $236 million in summer coin. Producer Avi Lerner promises a sequel to Lionsgate's ensemble actioner The Expendables, with director Sly Stallone hinting there will be new faces in the mix of butt-kicking mercenaries on the next mission.

I thought this summer was decent, but could have been stronger. However, I think a big reason for the possible downfall, is the fact that many are expecting the "big guns" in 2011. Viewers are anxiously awaiting what is set to hit theaters next year! But no need to mope about this year, because despite a declining economy folks still came to the movies!
