Friday Line-Up 9/3/2010

Here are this weekend's movie releases:

The American (R): 

In the aftermath of a job gone awry, an American hitman retreats to the Italian countryside, where he befriends a local priest and strikes up an unexpected romance while awaiting the details of his next assignment. Jack (George Clooney) is lucky to be alive after his Swedish assignment went sour, and he knows that it's only a matter of time before his luck runs out.

Going the Distance (R): 

Erin (Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (Justin Long) are very much in love. When Erin moves to San Francisco to finish her journalism degree and Garrett stays behind in New York to work in the music industry, they gamely keep their romance alive with webcams and frequent-flyer miles. 

Machete (R): 

Robert Rodriguez brings a new breed of anti-hero to the big screen in this hyper-violent adaptation of the "fake" trailer originally featured in the 2007 double-feature exploitation throwback Grindhouse. Machete (Danny Trejo) is a former Mexican Federale who plays by his own rules, and doesn't answer to anybody.

Last Train Home (NR): 

A family embarks on a journey to reunite with relatives. 

Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (R): 

The story of Jacques Mesrine, France's public enemy No. 1 during the 1970s. After nearly two decades of legendary criminal feats -- from multiple bank robberies and to prison breaks -- Mesrine was gunned down by the French police in Paris.

White Wedding (NR): 

Sparks fly when a groom (Kenneth Nkosi) and his best man (Rapulana Seiphemo) hitch a ride to the wedding with a pretty British doctor (Jodie Whittaker) .

The Winning Season (PG-13): 

Increasingly estranged from his own daughter, a boozy busboy (Sam Rockwell) gets a shot at redemption when an old friend (Rob Corddry) hires him to coach a girls' varsity basketball team.

A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (R): 

Love, betrayal and murder take root in the deserts of China in this comedy-drama from filmmaker Zhang Yimou.

Prince of Broadway (NR): 

A New York street hustler specializing in name-brand knock-offs finds his highly-profitable game suddenly complicated when his ex-girlfriend shows up toting the son he never knew he had in director Sean Baker's warmhearted tale of a life interrupted.

The Other Guys (PG-13): 

NYPD Detectives Christopher Danson and P.K. Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) are the baddest and most beloved cops in New York City. They don’t get tattoos – other men get tattoos of them. Two desks over and one back, sit Detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). You’ve seen them in the background of photos of Danson and Highsmith, out of focus and eyes closed. They’re not heroes – they’re "the Other Guys." 

Step Up 3D (PG-13): 

New York’s intense street dancing underground comes alive in eye-popping Digital 3D in the third installment of the STEP UP franchise as the raw, passion-fueled culture goes global.

Middle Men (R): 

Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) is a legitimate Texas businessman who wanders off the straight-and-narrow path when he meets Wayne Beering (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Gabriel Macht), a slimy pair of Internet porn profiteers.

Flipped (PG): 

The coming-of-age romantic comedy “Flipped,” from director Rob Reiner, takes Bryce and Juli from Grade School to Junior High, through triumph and disaster, family drama and first love, as they make the discoveries that will define who they are – and who they are to each other. 

Cairo Time (NR): 

Juliette, a fashion magazine editor in her 50s, travels to Cairo to meet her husband, Mark, a UN official working in Gaza, for a three week vacation. When he is unavoidably delayed, he sends his friend Tareq, who had been his security officer for many years, to escort her throughout the beautiful and exotic city. The last thing anyone expects is that they will fall in love. 

The Disappearance of Alice Creed (R): 

The kidnappers are Danny (Martin Compston) and Vic (Eddie Marsan), two ex-cons planning to make a mint on the ransom for the young woman. Their hostage is Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton), daughter of a rich businessman, chosen by Vic and Danny as their passport to a better life. 

Lebanon (R): 

A new gunner (Yoav Donat) joins a lone Israeli tank on the day that Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon heralds the start of war.

Brotherhood (NR): 

Former Danish servicemen Tykke and Jimmy are thrown together while training in a neo-Nazi group. Moving from hostility through grudging admiration to friendship and finally passion, events take a darker turn when their illicit relationship in uncovered.

The Oxford Murders (R): 

At Oxford University, a professor and a grad student work together to try and stop a potential series of murders seemingly linked by mathematical symbols.

Twelve (R): 

Based on the controversial Nick McDonell novel, TWELVE follows high school dropout turned successful drug dealer White Mike (Chace Crawford) in New York's Upper East Side. Business is booming when all of the kids are home from boarding school and everyone has money to blow. 

The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest (PG): 

Thematic elements involving hardships of climbing, and some historical smoking images. Conrad Anker tries to unravel the mystery of the death of George Mallory on Mount Everest.

The Dry Land (R): 

A soldier comes home from the war but can't find peace in his heart and mind in this independent drama. 

The Extra Man (R):  

A lonely writer quits his job at a Princeton prep school and sets his sights on New York, where he forges an unlikely bond with an eccentric playwright who now earns his living as an escort for wealthy Manhattan widows.

Family Affair (NR):  

In Family Affair, filmmaker Chico David Colvard takes us on a very personal and uncompromising journey, where we discover that at the age of nine he accidentally shot his sister; believing she would die from her injuries, she revealed to the mother and police that the father had sexually molested her and her sisters for years.

Get Low (PG-13): 

When much-feared hermit Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) comes to town with a wad of cash and announces his intention to preside over his own funeral, fast-talking mortician Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) smells a big payday in the air.

Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel (R):  

Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel takes an intimate look at the outspoken, flamboyant founder of the Playboy empire. Compelling interviews with a remarkable Who’s Who of the decades, and rare footage, present a brilliant and entertaining snapshot of the life of an extraordinary man and the controversies that surrounded him.

Smash His Camera (NR): 

The film is the story of infamous New York City paparazzo Ron Galella, legendary for his restraining order from Jackie O and losing five teeth at the hands of Marlon Brando, all in the service of generating some of the most iconic and memorable celebrity photographs of the 1970s.

The Dealer (NR): 

It’s an Action Movie that revolves around a young guy who grew up in a poor family, in a struggle to overcome his poor origins goes from being a casino bookie to a drug dealer after meeting the love of his life a charming dancer.

Here are you Friday Flicks line-up:

Salt (PG-13): 

Centers on a CIA officer (Angeline Jolie) who is fingered as a Russian sleeper spy. She eludes capture by superiors who are convinced she is out to assassinate the president. While trying to reunite with her family, she struggles to prove someone else is the traitor.

Ramona and Beezus (G): 

Based on the "Ramona" series of novels written by Beverly Cleary. As everyone knows, Ramona Quimby lives on Klickitat Street. The stories of her adventures begin in Beezus and Ramona, where Beezus, who is just turning 10, finds 4-year-old Ramona an exasperating little sister!

Countdown to Zero (PG): 

Traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident.

Farewell (NR): 

A French businessman based in Moscow, Pierre Froment, makes an unlikely connection with Grigoriev, a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. 

Life During Wartime (NR): 

The question of forgiveness and its limits threads throughout a series of intersecting love stories, offering clarity and, perhaps, alternatives to the comforts of forgetting. Ten years have passed since a series of shocking and catastrophic revelations shattered the world of the Jordan family. 

Spoken Word (NR): 

A poet (Kuno Becker) falls prey to the lure of the criminal life after he returns home to take care of his dying father. 

Valhalla Rising (NR):

Friday Releases 7/9/2010

Here are this week's theater releases:

[REC]2 (R): The highly anticipated sequel to one of the scariest films of all time, "[Rec] 2" picks up 15 minutes from where we left off, taking us back into the quarantined apartment building where a terrifying virus has run rampant, turning the occupants into mindlessly violent, raging beasts. 

Despicable Me (PG): In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. 

The Kids Are All Right (R): Lesbian couple Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Bening) have been together for almost 20 years, and have two teenage offspring named Joni and Laser, who were conceived via artificial insemination. Unbeknownst to their mothers, Joni and Laser seek out their biological father, an entrepreneur named Paul (Mark Ruffalo) . Complications arise when the teens bond with Paul and invite him into their lives.

Predators (NR): Maverick filmmaker Robert Rodriguez tackles producing duties for a revamp of the Predator film series with this 20th Century Fox/Troublemaker Studios production focusing on a human survival adventure set on the Predator's home planet.

The Girl Who Played With Fire (NR): Two journalists on the verge of exposing their story in Millennium about an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden are brutally murdered.
