The Midnight Shows have continued and this week's key theme is ACTION!! Wow!! That is the first thought that comes to mind after watching the new action flick Fast Five. The moment the film begins the ride begins. Let me just point out that I am a personal fan of the entire Fast and Furious franchise. And this 5th installment did not disappoint, there were plenty of fast cars, beautiful women, and action scenes to last a lifetime. Just imagine starting up the engine, pressing on the gas, ready to take off. Fast Five reminds me of The Italian Job to the 20th degree.
Here's a brief set-up just to get your feet wet...Keep in mind, the film begins where the fourth installment ended and before The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift with former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) leading an assault on the bus transporting Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) to prison. And of course Toretto is freed and the party splits up, with each one of them making their way to South America.
Now I had my reservation on how the film would play out with all of the past characters coming back, but it worked out almost flawlessly. We get an opportunity to see all the past characters from the previous Fast and Furious movies (Dominic, Brian, Roman, Tej, Han, Mia, and even Vince) along with some new additions to the crew. Reprising the role of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) truly exemplifies what is a true leader. I can't even be mad with Vin Diesel's character because he holds his own at all costs. By the end of the film you truly empathize with Dom and in a small secretive way you want him to escape, and really be free. And Brian is going to be Brian, even though he may not be a cop anymore he still possesses the skills to get the job done. If anything he has a wild card because he knows what to look for and what to expect. However, there is a soft side that comes into play now that the relationship between him and Mia (Toretto's younger sister) is really blossoming.
The chemistry between Dominic and Brian & Dominic and Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) works out quite well. For just a brief moment you almost wonder if they work together as a cohesive team/one unit....naw maybe not lol. Johnson was the perfect fit for this role, I really could not see anyone else pulling this off so effortlessly. And the relationship between Dominic and Brian definitely blossoms much more, the connection that they have really goes to another level. With the whole cast, but these guys in particular, we get the chance to explores the character personalities, they tend to show more humor, fear, vulnerability and determination on this go around and this adds strength and depth to the film, which was somewhat lacking in the previous Fast and Furious movies.
Now you gotta love the fact that Ludacris and Tyrese have come back as well, we get an opportunity to learn just a little bit more about their characters prior to the heist. Both seem to have similar taste but express it differently. And I gotta admit that gave some one-liners that I am still laughing about. But let us not forget the surprise appearances, and I mean I was like whoa, I had a "where did you come from moment?". The fact that Han (Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift) and Vince (The Fast and The Furious) come back is like this adds a little mystery. Considering I thought Han was dead and Vince had pretty much disappeared from the face of the earth. But you gotta love a good twist.
There is not a moment of rest as it relates to this film. Everything from the infamous fight scene between The Rock and Vin Diesel, from the chases on foot, the shoot outs, and most importantly the car chases. Even as I am writing this I am getting chills because I am still in amazement of all the excitement and action. This particular installment put the Fast and Furious franchise back on the map.
Now don't get me wrong there were a few corny lines, but not enough to spoil the movie. Once again I was literally hanging on the edge of my seat EYE WIDE OPEN!!! (I think the soundtrack helped with the flow too.) This movie truly lived up to its hype and some. Trust me when I say all my TRUE Fast and Furious fans will not be disappointed. I guarantee the story is not predictable and the surprises will keep coming all the way to the end. The cast has definitely matured and it shows some new found production, quality is truly better than quantity.
What I really liked about this movie was the ending the fact that they brought it full circle, when it all boils down this series has been about the cars and what better way to "close-out" than with a final race between O'Connor and Toretto. The true battle that seems to never get a true winner.
***SPECIAL NOTE: Make sure to say past the credits folks there is nice surprise!! Trust me you do not want to miss it!! You will definitely leave out the theater scratching your head saying, "did I just see that?"***

One on One with "Shaft or Sidney Poitier: Black Masculinity in Comic Books" filmmaker Jonathan Gayles
OK so you know I have been promising to you all my first film interview, well you don't have to wait any longer!!
I was able to have the opportunity on last week to sit down and chat with first time filmmaker and Georgia State University professor Dr. Jonathan Gayles, to discuss his documentary "Shaft or Sidney Poitier: Black Masculinity in Comic Books". It was truly a pleasure to get some of the "ins and outs" of this great documentary.
SHAFT OR SIDNEY POITIER is a documentary film examining the representation of Black masculinity in comic books.Through interviews with prominent artists, scholars and cultural critics along with images from the comic books themselves, this film examines the degree to which early Black superheroes generally adhered to common stereotypes about Black men. From the humorous, to the offensive, early Black superheroes are critically considered.
Some key points that were discussed in the interview included topics on the Black Age Movement, ECBACC, independent black comic artists, Dwayne McDuffie, as well as specific characters like Luke Cage and Brotherman, and much more.
Check it out here...
Also please make sure to check out Dr. Gayles website: BlackSuperHeroes for more information regarding the documentary as well as other projects in store. Also make sure to check him out on Twitter as well... www.twitter.com/shaftorsidney
I highly recommend you check out this documentary!! There is something that everyone can take from watching this film.

Madea's Big Happy Family...Just in time for Easter
As many of you know, tis the season for the "midnight shows". And my first one for the year is Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family.
What a more appropriate movie to come out during the Easter weekend. Here is a movie that gives you all the basics good actors, decent plot, important lessons/messages, and of course laughter. This is Tyler Perry's 11th film that he has directed and/or written and with each year I definitely see progression (6th in which the Madea character plays a role). With this movie in particular we have somewhat of a completely new cast (Shannon Kane, Rodney Perry, Teyana Taylor) with a seasoned veteran (Loretta Devine), we even get to see the "Old Spice" guy in a serious role.
Here's a small synopsis just to get the ball rolling...
Madea jumps into action when her niece, Shirley, receives distressing news about her health. All Shirley wants is to gather her three adult children around her and share the news as a family. But Tammy, Kimberly and Byron are too distracted by their own problems: Tammy can't manage her unruly children or her broken marriage; Kimberly is gripped with anger and takes it out on her husband; and Byron, after spending two years in jail, is under pressure to deal drugs again. It's up to Madea, with the help of the equally rambunctious Aunt Bam, to gather the clan together and make things right the only way she knows how: with a lot of tough love, laughter ... and the revelation of a long-buried family secret. -Lionsgate
For the most part we the viewer get an opportunity to see if this family can get on one accord for the sake of their mother. As much as it may come off as foolish or "shucking and jiving" I can appreciate the style in which Tyler Perry uses to get his point across. We all may not agree with the method, but the end result still keeps us coming back for more.
So many messages are in this movie, you might not realize that its playing a dual role, to teach and to entertain. As a matter fact many of the topics that were discussed probably will hit very close to home (violative sibling rivalry, respect for parents/elders, "baby-daddy & baby-mama drama", rape, keeping secrets). I must point out something interesting about the Madea character. Although she is still her same feisty self, in this movie she seems to tone it down just a little. Her character is so convincing, for just a brief moment you forget about her shenanigans.
As always we get there are messages that we must take from the film, but this one seemed to be more of movie that geared at making you laugh versus being a teachable moment. Now maybe that was the plan, or maybe not.
The central theme with this movie is the importance of family communication. So often we get wrapped up my family does this, and my family does that, that we forget about the simple things. Shirley (Loretta Devine) just wants her family to be together just one last time, is that too much to ask for these days? But until everyone can see past their own spotlight, that will never be accomplished.
In addition to the central theme/focus there was actually some pretty good acting. Of course Ms. Devine always puts on an excellent performance, maybe soon she will get the recognition that she deserves. Now there were three folks in particular that surprised me and in a good way. Shad "Bow Wow" Moss, Cassi Davis, and Isaiah Mustafa all seemed to put a little bit more "acting power" than their fellow cast mates. Each one of them stood out for me partly because they played a significant role to the family. Without giving too much Davis, Moss, and Mustafa are like the glue that keeps everything together. Then you have some pretty good performances from comedian Rodney Perry (Harold) and Teyana Taylor (Sabrina) who definitely add some comic relief. And we can't forget Mr. Brown and Cora (David & Tamala Mann) their performances speak for themselves.
Now we can talk about the fact that Tyler Perry dresses up like a woman all day everyday, but when it boils down the question for me will still remain "what's the bigger picture?" I am all for one not promoting negative stereotypes. But at the same time we can learn from them, its kind of like looking at a mirror and seeing our faults so that we can correct them.
All in all, its a pretty good movie for what it is worth. As with most of Perry's film all the family can check this out and get something that they can take home with them.

Waiting to Exhale Part 2 ... Just maybe
Twentieth Century Fox is developing Getting to Happy, the recently released sequel to Waiting to Exhale. The book catches up with the four women in Waiting to Exhale 15 years later. If you all recall it has been about 16 years since the premiere Terry McMillan's film adaptation Waiting to Exhale.
Waiting to Exhale, centers on four female friends living in the Phoenix, Arizona area and their relationships with men and one another. All of them are "holding their breath" until the day they can feel comfortable in a committed relationship with a man. The movie is notable for having an all-African American cast. The 'Los Angeles Times would even call it a "social phenomenon".
Now 15 years later we resume the story with Getting Happy. All four women are back, but this time, of course, they're middle-aged. The issues of their youth have morphed into new ones. There are children now from failed relationships and grandchildren, too, along with failed businesses and second mortgages. Each of the four is in her 50s, or about to be, and not quite sure what to do with herself.
During a recent sit-down with Jumping the Broom & Waiting to Exhale stars Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine they both briefly mentioned that a Waiting to Exhale 2 is in the works/talks. Check out some of the comments below...
Is there talks about a ‘Waiting to Exhale 2’?
Loretta Devine: There’s talk.
Angela Bassett: There’s talk. We’re in the middle stages of talking. There’s a script in place, and they (the writers) are happy with it, but there needs to be some tweaking of it. Forest (Whitaker) is on board to direct it. It could go within a year. That’s about all I can tell you. We haven’t read the script because they are getting it together. We can read it now, but they are going to change it. We’ll read it in six weeks.
No too long ago, McMillian tweeted the following statement, “We are working on the script for HAPPY. Will know in about a month or so when we’ll begin production. Probably on screens in 2012.”

Trailer Alert: "The Help"
Got a new film for you to be on the look out for ladies and gents...The Help is an upcoming film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel. Now I have been keeping my eye on this film ever since I found out that Academy-Award nominated actress Viola Davis was in starring in the lead role. Check out the synopsis and a clip...
Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) is a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) is an African-American maid who has often offended her employers despite her family's struggles with money and her desperate need for jobs; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Emma Stone) is a young white woman who has recently moved back home after graduating from college to find out her childhood maid has mysteriously disappeared. These three stories intertwine to explain how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help"; yet they are always kept at a certain distance because of racial lines.
The Help (Trailer No. 1)
I am intrigued to see what this finish product will be but at the same I am a bit skeptical of its overall portrayal. I hate to say the obvious, so I will keep quiet.I guess I should be looking at the bigger picture, so until then I will wait to see what transpires after the film is released.
The Help has a release date of August 12, 2011.

Will Packer to Bring Steve Harvey's Best Seller to the Hollywood Screen
Say it ain't so..."Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man" New York Times Bestselling author Steve Harvey will be seeing the Hollywood bright lights very soon!!
Will Packer, the mastermind behind such black blockbusters as Stomp The Yard and Obsessed and have reportedly acquired the film rights to the Amistad/Harper Collins book.
Just last week Producer Will Packer tweeted...“MY NEXT MOVIE BASED ON @IAmSteveHarvey’s bestseller “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” shoots this summer… All my real up and coming actors stay tuned for casting info… All my 15MIN OF FAME ppl stay tuned to learn how you can win a walk on role. I’ll be on @IAmSteveHarvey’s show next Tues to give details.”
Harvey would tell BlackVoices.com, "It really has to be some amount of favor from God, because I have no experience at writing a book," he continued. "It ain't like I've been there, done that. It's got to be favor from God. It's gotta be something that he has planned for me bigger than I could see, because I just wanted to write a book so the women on my show could quit asking me to write a book."
With the screenplay adaptation pretty much complete, the film is scheduled to begin shooting this summer. No cast has been set as of yet, so its like a blank canvas. But as more details are revealed, we will make sure to let you know...Just out of curiosity who would you like to see in the roles?
As someone who has read Mr. Harvey's book I definitely will be interested in seeing it on the big screen.

Hanna...Watch out now!!
A 16-year-old who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives.
This 2011 action thriller definitely made a statement that, "don't underestimate the ladies!!" The preview alone had me convinced, we finally get to see a young girl in an action related role an she shows no mercy! Each moment of this film had me hanging on my seat, engrossed with each scene. Can you imagine a 16 year old who basically since birth has been trained to be independent? In essence, leading lady Hanna (Saorise Ronan) is trained to be something we would today call a "super killer". She has had no childhood and basically had to grow-up rather quickly. Regard of its a wild animal, or humans, doesn't matter. And to top it off, she is proficient in all of her techniques. Hanna is perfect for my "independent females" who want to enjoy high-speed plot, with some great filmmaking techniques.
For just a small moment while watching this film, I felt as though Hanna was my hero. She did any and everything with no fear or hesitation. On the flip side even though Hanna is being raised only by her "father" (Eric Bana) in an adult-like manner her mentality is still childlike. Hanna yearns to be like normal teenagers and she struggles with this through out the movie. You can tell that she misses what other teenagers have, all the while trying to survive. As I think about it, many of the noteworthy scenes that involve Hanna primarily in the film are these one-take or long-take sequences that just keep you hanging on for dear life, with no turning back. That is one thing that that they did get right, the camera work all through out the film is quite intriguing and dazzles the eyes.
Hanna is a prime example of a fast paced action thriller that features strong performances from a powerful cast along with a well-rounded storyline. Main characters Hanna, Erik, and Marissa do an outstanding job of playing out the cat and mouse game. Just when you think they are close to escaping or even close to getting caught the tides quickly turn. Marissa (played by Cate Blanchett) plays a flawless antagonist. I am convinced that she is a pro when it comes to being the "bad guy". I will also say that I am glad to see that the director Joe Wright picked a newcomer to play Hanna, it gives a fresh quality to the screen. Then you even have actors who give a surprising performance like Tom Hollander in his role as Issacs, trust me when I tell you this guy right here make you want to personally take him out.
Hanna is a film is that is smart, moving, and visually captivating. There are several moments in which simplicity played out perfectly. In several of the scenes we are able to take a visually tantalizing journey, jammed packed with a whole heap of power. Let's just say Hanna is the equivalent of the The Professional plus Brothers Grimm, gotta love it! And in the end the child wakes up from the nightmare.
After watching this movie, I came to the realization that if you are a fan of the Kill Bill series and the The Fifth Element, then this will be right up your alley. Matter fact I almost wonder if there is some distant relationship between The Bride in Kill, Leeloo, and Hanna....hmmm maybe so. All in all, I thought the film was quite exciting and full of action, however there were still questions that went unanswered that kind of left the story hanging for me. Unfortunately there was a lack a character development, it kind of just gets straight to the point, and in some cases that works but I'm not quite sure if it did in this case. However, despite that minor factor it was definitely worth seeing.
I will say this, Hanna got some mad skills!!

New Additions to the "Dark Knight Rises" cast...
So early this year the third and final Batman installment Dark Knight Rises revealed its cast, and the most important character that we were waiting on was whether the Joker would return. Well instead of the Joker, there is a new sheriff in town, Bane, who is to be played by Tom Hardy (Inception). Bane is said to be one of Batman's most dangerous enemy.
Director Christopher Nolan had added a few more tricks up his sleeve with the addition of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Alberto Falcone, and the latest addition The Social Network's Josh Pence (the other Winklevoss twin) who will play the younger version of Ra's Al Ghul, the character Liam Neeson played in Batman Begins. And then we have two folks in the rumor mill Juno Temple and Marion Cotillard, no news yet on their roles if any.
And of course we have our "regulars" who will be returning, Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Gary Oldham (Jim Gordon), Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox), Micheal Caine (Alfred), and even Katie Holmes (Elaine Dawes).
Filming is scheduled to begin this May and finish in November, about 4-6 weeks will take place in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dark Knight Rises is set to hit theaters July 20th, 2012.

An Exclusive For All My Twilight Fans!!
I have a little treat for all my Twilight fans, here is a little sneak peek at Bella's wedding gown. Now we all know what is coming next in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1... the wedding of the year between Bella and Edward. Entertainment Weekly has given us an exclusive look at what Bella's dress is to look like on the big screen.
Check it out first hand...
Now if you notice there are some interesting yet subtle differences between Meyer’s idea of what Bella looks like versus Kristen Stewart’s interpretation. In the image to the left, she has somewhat of a dry, blank and almost zombie-like. And then in the picture to the right, Bella has a little bit more insecurity behind the eyes (and then there's also the fact that her hair is not that long either).
I guess we will have to wait and see until November which one is chosen for the film.
So what are your thoughts?

Thursday Throwback!! "Dialogue With Black Filmmakers"
I happen to be surfing around on the internet and I came across an interesting article on a fellow cinematic website Shadow And Act (side note: You definitely wanna check them out) discussing a short-lived television series entitled Dialogue With Black Filmmakers. And I just knew I had to make mention of this as well on G-Breezy's Director's Cut. Dialogue With Black Filmmakers was a series hosted by critically acclaimed writer Alex Haley prior to him passing in 1992. It's been said that the episodes were shot in 1991, but unfortunately there is not much online written about the series.
Now here is an even more shocker it was shown on BET (definitely pre-booty shaking BET) during the 1992-93 season. Amazing that something of this nature existed, yet does not exist today. (Got my creative juices flowing!!) This would be the perfect type of series to be showcased on channels across the world.
In his episodes, Haley would talk to several filmmakers over the course of the series, including notable cinematic figures of the time, like Spike Lee, John Singleton, Bill Duke, Quincy Jones and numerous others. As I writing I am speechless at the same time, because this could have really been something great!! Well I digress, this just let's us know what other avenues and opportunities that are available to the black cinematic world.
Just so you can get a little taste here are a few episodes including guests, Spike Lee and Gordon Parks, and the icing on the cake there was even an Oscar Micheaux tribute (would have loved to see that!!). All clips can be found on YouTube.

I could think of several folks that could be on this show now, if it existed today (Ava DuVernay, Tyler Perry, Will Packer, Mara Brock Ali, and the list goes on)....Hmmmm food for thought!

New Trailer Alert: "35 & Ticking"
Here is a film that I am sure many of us can relate to in some sort of way, whether we are the victim or we know someone who is.
35 And Ticking, is an ensemble romantic comedy written and directed by Russ Parr, starring Nicole Ari Parker, Tamala Jones, Kevin Hart, Keith Robinson, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Meagan Good, Mike Epps and Clifton Powell.
Victoria (Tamala Jones), Zenobia (Nicole Ari Parker), Cleavon (Kevin Hart), and Phil (Keith Robinson), four friends approaching the age of 35, are all struggling to build the families they've always dreamed of. While Zenobia is still looking for a man, Victoria is married to a man who doesn't want children. Clevon, meanwhile, is too geeky to get a woman, and Phil is already married with children, but his wife is not very interested in being a mother. All four of them try to rectify their romantic lives and futures while their biological clocks tick away.
Like I said a very familar story just now put to the big screen. Every now and then its good to have a film come out that presents on-going real life issues.
The film will be released in theaters on May 20th, courtesy of Image Entertainment, Swirl Films and Up To Parr Productions. No cities or how many screens have been identified, but I'm sure as we get closer to the release date we will have more information.
