Winnie Mandela NOT approving movie biopic AND Jennifer Hudson playing her!!
In interesting and controversial film news...
In a recent interview with CNN's Nadia Bilchik, activist Winnie expressed her concerns and disapproval for the upcoming Winnie film starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson.
"I have absolutely nothing against Jennifer, but I have everything against the movie itself," she told Bilchik, stating that she was not consulted about the movie. Keeping in mind, "this is Hollywood", so it is not all that surprising since when are expectations met these days.
This controversy has stemmed from numerous issues, one being the fact that they cast an American to portray Ms. Mandela (I am quite sure there were several other actresses from Africa that could have played this role...Anyone from the film Hotel Rwanda just to get the ball started...). Also Mandela attempted to block the movie from ever being made with legal action, citing she wanted to see the script to determine how accurate it is to the real life. And lastly, Hudson has never met Mandela, even though she has tried, film producers though it was not necessary since they wanted to stay as true to the book and script as possible.
Hmmm very interesting and somewhat suspect...
I can definitely understand her frustration and reasons for insult, why would they not want her input? It just seems as though that would have been part of the territory. But I guess the movie producer's did not feel the same way.
Here are Winnie's thoughts via CNN...
The movie is based on the book, 'Winnie Mandela: A Life.' The film hits theaters later this year.
