Spinoff Online Exclusive Interview with "Beats Rhymes & Life" Director Michael Rapaport

As we prep for the release of the award-winning documentary Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, check out this amazing interview with filmmaker Michael Rapaport fresh off his win at the LA Film Festival...

Rapaport, who makes his feature directing debut with his chronicle of the classic hip-hop group, is no stranger to Hollywood, having acted in more than 80 films and television series, including Beautiful Girls, True Romance, Mighty Aphrodite and Boston Public. But he’s also a native New Yorker and a self-professed super-fan of the Tribe.

We absolutely loved the documentary when it screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, so we were eager to hear more about the infamous discord between group members Phife and Q-Tip (along with the very public fact that Q-Tip has refused involvement in supporting the film), Rapaport’s experience growing up alongside Tribe’s members, and his transition from actor to director.

Spinoff: So – congratulations on winning the LA Film Fest audience award!

Rapaport: I know, it’s crazy, right?

I saw that you were promoting the documentary in Los Angeles with Jarobi, Ali and Phife – three of the four Tribe members.
Three outta four ain’t bad!

Considering the fact that the Tribe is all about brotherhood and unity and family dynamic – no matter how dysfunctional – how do you feel about not having one member, Q-Tip, with you to support the film?

I mean, at the end of the day he’s losing out on it. He’s losing out on the response. You know, the response that the movie gets is different than the response that their live performances give and the response to the albums. Obviously I would love to have the whole group together because that’s what the fans want to see, but it doesn’t affect me or affect the film, and the more that he doesn’t publicly support the film, the more curiosity it’s creating around the film. So I don’t know if he’s, like, a brilliant PR person or whatever but the more Q-Tip lets it be the other guys or makes comments on Twitter, it’s just creating more controversy and the movie continues to gain momentum – it’s coming out in more theaters now than initially planned and all those things are great, so there’s nothing I can do about it. I don’t even know where his head’s at.

The documentary is – in my opinion – incredibly neutral, considering the fact that you are a super fan of the Tribe. That had to be a really hard thing for you to do. You’ve mentioned that Tribe is your favorite rap group – how did you approach the relationship between Phife and Q-Tip, knowing that there’s this rift between them – how did you attempt to manage it? And did you walk into the project with allegiances one way or another?

No, I didn’t go in there with any allegiances. I’d never met Phife before I started making the movie. I’ve known Q-Tip. As far as how I kept perspective – I never judged them, as people, and I knew that it was not my place to judge them as a filmmaker and it was not my place to side with one or the other and it was a very tedious process – the editing process took a long time because we wanted to keep it balanced, and keep the perspective neutral in the film. Because telling a story that spans over 20 years from four people’s perspectives – they all have different versions of the big things that went down in the group. And trying to piece it together for what I think is the most important versions of each one of their truths was hard, but I didn’t meddle in their business. The most I meddled in was, when certain subjects would come up, I would say, “You ever talk to Tip about this?” Or, “You ever talk to Phife about this?” Or, “You guys ever sit down and talk about this?” And the answer – shockingly – was mostly, “No.” And the thing that I related to is the fact that I’ve been through my own fractured relationships and I know my part in my own fractured relationships and how hard it is to let go of things – resentment, frustration, feeling that you’ve been cheated or deceived – all those things are hard for all of us to let go of. So I certainly know that I’m no champion in that area and I have my faults in that area so I wasn’t in a place to judge them.

Fresh Off the Press Trailer: "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol"

Well for those, like me, who have see the awesomeness that I call Transformers: Dark of the Moon, then you also got a chance to see the new trailer for the much anticipated 4th installment to an interesting series....Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol !!

But if you want to see it now and can't wait check it out below...

When a terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin, the United States government activates "Ghost Protocol" and disavows the entire Impossible Mission Force. Ethan Hunt and his team are blamed for the attack, but are allowed to escape as part of a plan to enable them to operate outside their agency. Hunt is warned that if any member of his team is captured or compromised, they will be charged as terrorists planning a nuclear strike. He is forced to work with fellow IMF agent Brandt, who knows much more about Hunt and his past than Hunt himself.

The film is directed by Brad Bird and produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams and Paula Wagner. It stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Josh Holloway.

MIGC hits theaters this winter December 16th, 2011.

True Example of a Summer Blockbuster = "Transformers: Dark of the Moon"

What I like about this film that was not really done in the first two was the thourough historical background that they gave in the beginning of the film. It truly sets the tone for what the audience is about to watch. And to top it off there were a few famous cameos to add icing on the cake. Those first few minutes really built the foundation for the journey we as the viewer was about to embark upon. In a nutshell, Transformers: Dark of the Moon basically tells the story of the Autobots learning about a Cybertronian spacecraft that's hidden on the Moon, and the race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets. Now everything that leads up to it, in the middle, and the end is what makes this film a huge success!!

Let me first start with the CGI it can be described in two words.... "Awesome Fluidity". Everything was crystal clear, which is definitely a step up from the prior two films. You can tell that Bay was trying to improve and make better with each one. The action scenes are WAY BETTER, so much to the point that you jump out your seat it's so good!

Now as it relates to the characters Optimus Prime is a BEAST!! That Autobot is no joke, he can handle any and everything...that's one BAD ROBOT!! With this third installment, I think this one they did a better job matching the personalities with the new Autobots and the Decipticons. A lot of the lame humor was thrown out the window (thank goodness). Although we can definitely a little more humor in some more than others. And of course we have our "veteran" Autobots who still keep us wanting more! In this one we get some new faces and some new vehicles "Sideswipe [Chevy Corvette Stingray concept] my personal fav, "Mirage" [Ferrari 458 Italia], "The Wreckers" [NASCAR Sprint Cup series stock cars], "Brains", and of course "Sentinel Prime" [Rosenbauer fire truck]. Then you have the Decepticons which include new folks like "Shockwave", "Soundwave" [Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG] as well as others. All I can say is UNBELIEVABLE!! The more and more I look at "Bumblebee" the more I want to get a Chevy Camaro...it's just got that FIRE!!

The human characters were not too bad themselves either. Of course we have Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf...who is actually quite a cutie) who seems to mature with each film, you can tell that he definitely trying to redefine his role and how he fits into this Autobot/Human connection. I actually like Sam's new lady Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) much better than Megan Fox's character from the previous two. She had much more believable spark, charm, and wit plus I she was more relatable. Now don't get me wrong she portrayed a certain "vixen" type image but it seemed to be more tamed. Now John Malkovich's (Bruce Brazos) and Ken Jeong's (Jerry Wang) characters were definitely a pleasant surprise. I was not sure how each of them were going to be used but it worked in a weird, quirky kind of way. It was not too much and not too little. It was good that Jeong played the typ of guy that he did, because it somewhat redeemed him from his earlier summer film The Hangover Part II. Now what would a Transformers film be without Sam's parents Ron & Judy (Kevin Dunn & Julie White) and good ol' Simmons (John Turturro), it just wouldn't be right. You can't help but laugh when they hit the screen. And we can't forget the hard-ass, self-righteous character Mearing (played by Frances McDormand), the charming but evil second generation science brat Dylan (Patrick Dempsey) and the goofy but smart assistant Dutch (played by Alan Tudyk). Each of these supporting cast members added an ingredient that truly flavored the film. I was a little leary on what they were going to doing with all these big names, but they managed it well.

Michael Bay is truly genius with this film he pretty much shut down any nay-sayers for a very long time. From beginning to end you could tell that this was a Bay-directed film. Certain elements (ex. slow motion and hovering helicopters) always shine through. What's there not to like about about a city (Chicago) slowly crimbling into pieces, especially when it is done is such an artful way. There are certain scenes that seem like  Bay basically returned back to the drawing board with an idea from one of the previous two movies to this time around do it bigger and with better camera positioning; he wanted to make the point of, "THIS is what I meant for it to look like."  The moments seem just more epic!!

And I love love love the music, it just builds the energy and explodes at the perfect moments. It's nothing like having an awesome soundtrack to go along with an excellent flick, it just makes the movie experience more enjoyable.
The plot, the characters, the story all build up to the final hour of back to back action sequences of spectacle, dynamic stealth, wild violence and utter amazement that will excite the masses and probably confuse the critics since they can never assess these kind of movies. Personally what does it need to be compared to? And when it is all said and done whoever attempts to create a franchise will have a lot of work cut out for them, matter fact they can use this one as a foundation, because the stakes that Michael Bay has placed are pretty damn high in the sky!

Transformers: Dark of the Moon was an outstanding film, and pretty much #1 out of the three made so far. Keep in mind I am not a fan of 3D but this was the first film I watched in the IMAX 3D and needless to say I was very impressed! No complaints from me!! Without a shadow of doubt this movie exceeded all of my expectations and then some. The wait and the hype that cam along with it was well worth the wait!! As a matter of fact I will probably check it out again, it was just that good! And trust me when I say you can't go wrong seeing it in the IMAX 3D, worth every penny!! Michael Bay made good on his promise that he was going to improve on the second film and he did it immensely.

As a good friend of mine said..."Transformers: Dark Moon is ridiculous! It should be called 'Break all the Things: The Movie'..."

Ratings: 5 out of 5 stars

2011 American Black Film Festival Line-up

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) will be taking place in less than a week in Miami, FL July 6-8, 2011. This is one of the hottest film festivals for African Americans!! And this year is no different, matter fact let's see what is on the docket this year!!

Recently announced Robert Townsend's film In The Hive will be the ABFF opening night film selection. Written by Cheryl L. West, the film will star Michael Clarke Duncan, Loretta Devine, Vivica A. Fox, Ali Liebert, Roger Guenveur Smith, Bre Scullark, and several others.

In the Hive is based on the real experiences of the people who attend and teach at a special school in North Carolina called "The Hive". It is based on a true story about this woman in North Carolina named Vivian Saunders, who basically without really any formal education, started an alternative school for all these boys who were being kicked out: gang bangers, drug dealers. And they're all teenage, fathers at 14 and 15.

Another highlight for this year's festival is the ABFF Centerpiece film, Trinity Goodheart. R&B crooner Eric Benet will be taking on the starring role of this much anticipated film. Written by Rhonda Freeman-Baraka and directed by cinematographer Joanne Hock, the film centers around a 12-year-old girl (Erica Gluck) on a mission to reunite her disjointed family.

Trinity Goodheart (Gluck) is an exceptionally gifted 12 year old girl who is raised by her free-spirited musician father Jeremy (Benet). When Trinity is visited by an angel who leaves her a pendant that belonged to her long lost mother, Trinity concludes her mother is in danger and needs her help. 2011 Black Women Film Festival Screenings

What an amazing weekend at the 2011 Black Women Film Festival!! So much was gained from this weekend. Everything from films to social networking to workshops took place over the course of these three days. In addition, at the end of the day there was laughing, crying, smiles, tears of joy all combined in one!! Connections being made, friendships being formed!!

The first thing that opened my eyes with pure excitement was on Friday night, all of the people gathered at the Woodruff Arts Center for this wonderful event. It's such a great feeling to see the gathering of good people, especially Black women!! You could not help but feel the positive energy that filled the building!!

So the question is asked, "Are you ready to take a cinematic journey?!". I know I definitely was...Ready for the World!! Tonight was full of heavy hitters, and if you missed it, then you missed out on a royal treat! Not only did the audience get to witness some great films, but the people who were involved with the projects actually made an appearance as well!

Friday's theme was ... "Films to Inspire and Uplift by and About Black Women".

First up was, Spelman College Digital Moving Image Salon. In this film we would learn about the first African American female animator and the digital production lab that she would create to cultivate a new generation of filmmakers. Let me first say I was thoroughly impressed with this film presentation. So much so, that I would not mind going back to undergrad and pursue that program for myself. In this film we would get a chance to step into the life of Spelman professor Dr. Ayoka Chenzira. Here is a dynamic women who definitely stands her ground. She is a true inspiration to everyone that comes in her path. Dr. A as some of students would call her was able to centralize the voice of women through her animation, thus bringing it to life. Many would say that she is "way ahead of the curve", and it was evident in everything that she did. Dr. A was able to partner computers to be used with media so that it could take on a variety of voices. According to fellow Spelman professor W. Jelani Cobb, "she was a black women who was in various places in a hostile climate. And to think, her first film Alma's Rainbow would stay in the Top 40 as well as be on the same docket with such films as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and the cinematic classic Sankofa. Without a shadow of doubt Dr. A was able to impart a love for filmmaking as well as her students imparting the same love back to her. She truly has a remarkable gift that has produced some great talents from Emmy-award winners, to PhD candidates, to of course aspiring filmmakers. Dr. A's legacy truly lives on and will continue to do so, for quite some time.

Next on the line-up was the story of an unsung heroine as well as a historical moment that will never be forgotten. Andrew Young presents, Stars Fell on Alabama tells the story civil rights warrior Amelia Boynton along with various politicians, entrepreneurs, and other celebrities tracing important steps taken during the Civil Rights Movement.

Crossing a bridge, one would think should be as easy as 1-2-3, but this was not the case in Selma, Alabama. African Americans during the 50s and 60s wanted several things, but one thing in particular was that of voting. Here in Selma, these civil rights activists went through more than there share day in and day out. C.T. Vivian, John Lewis, Hosea Williams were just a few of the civil rights leaders who led the way to this remarkable journey. During the time of the march, the original intention was to be orderly and peacefully, something very close to a "military procedure". However what one has to remember is that during this time although it was meant to be orderly it was anything but that.

Over the course of the months that would pass by a lot of serious deaths powerful and graphic images would take place. As I watched the film, just watching the re-enactment truly hits the soul. At times I caught myself cringing and getting angry because of the events taking place. The questions are constantly stirring in your mind, "why would these troopers cause a riot?", "why would these people be so mean?"...these are all things that could not be answered. But the main question that even puzzles me today is, how could the U.S. send troops to Vietnam for a war not even about them, but would not send one single set of troops to Alabama to regulate the Selma situation.

Eventually after several attempts were made to cross that Selma bridge, all the heartache, hard work, dedication, and commitment would come to fruition. Although lives were taken, they did not go out in vain. This journey would become a "spiritual strategy" that would turn into a "spiritual awakening". Finally in 1965, President Johnson would pass the "Voting Rights Act of 1965". That would finally be the light at the end of the tunnel, that African Americans so desperately needed.

Here is a film that played a dual role, it took us on journey for freedom and basic human rights, and at the same time gave us a remarkable history lesson. And to add icing to the cake, the honorable Andrew Young and his daughter Andrea were in the audience to share in the experience. This movie will definitely do great things especially if it is brought to the classroom.

Following this great historical documentary was a sneak peak into director Jerry Allen Davis film The Shanghai Hotel, starring Hill Harper.

The Shanghai Hotel is the story of a young woman named Yin Yin, who illegally buys her way to the USA from communist China hoping to make a better life for herself and her family. After a long, treacherous journey stowed away in the dark hull of an overcrowded cargo ship. Yin Yin arrives in New York City for what she thinks will be the beginning of a better life. Falsely promised a job in the technology industry, her dreams are shattered when she is told by the Snakeheads, an Asian gang, that he debt is much higher than expected.

This film examines the issue of slave trafficking with women of color. The Shanghai Hotel was also an entry for the 2011 American Black Film Festival in Miami, Fl. Although this was only a trailer, it definitely further piqued my interest and I'm sure many others as well.

Now here is a provocative film that is sure to make some heads turn. Added at the last moment was a surprise sneak peak trailer into the director Bill Duke's film Dark Girls. This is a movie that hits near and dear to my heart as it explores the idea of skin color and it long-lasting effects that it has placed on African American women. This film is set to premiere at the "International Black Film Festival in Nashville", which takes this October. Has anything really changed since the days of American slavery when dark-skinned Blacks were made to suffer even greater indignities than their lighter skinned counterparts? Ask today's dark Black woman.

I am very anxious to see this film one because the legendary Bill Duke is directing it, but at the same because Dark Girls is discussing an issue that is very prevalent in today's society that has been long overlooked.

And the last film that was shown on Friday night was a tear jerker, Crime After Crime. The story of Debbie Peagler and a 2011 Sundance Film Festival Selection. Director Yoav Potash gave us a microscopic viewing of what many would say is the fastest growing segment of the prison population...black women. This was an exclusive documentary that showed the legal battle to free Debbie Peagler who spent over a quarter century of her life in prison for being connected to a murder of a man who abused her.

Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) which is the largest women prison facility in the United States is where Debbie Peagler was housed over 28 years. To think that a women is serving a life sentence for domestic violence that was committed against her, just really makes you think about the justice system. It hurts the heart that a women must suffer for something that made her a victim.

The one thing that really stands out about this film is the protagonist Debbie, she somehow managed to keep a smile on her face throughout this whole ordeal even when she wanted to cry. Such a shining strong example of a true warrior inside and out. Debbie defined what it meant to take a negative and turn it into a positive. She managed to maintain her remorsefulness, but at the same time still voice one simple request for her abuser to just leave her alone. You can't help but want to reach out and hug and make all her worries go away.

This is a story that could easily make you question your trust in God and the legal system, but somehow that silver lining still manages to make its appearance.

Here again we were given another treat with the appearance of Debbie's daughter, to share in this moment.

Well all I can say is wow!! Friday night was definitely an experience that if you missed, well you missed out on a jewel!! But fear not the fun would continue on Saturday and Sunday!!

"Citizen Kane" is coming to Blu-Ray

One of my favorite films will be making its debut into the DVD/Blu-ray world... Citizen Kane!! Most film junkies or just anyone that likes a good classic, quality film has seen this movie, been inspired by it, or just simply modeled their style after it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Citizen Kane, one of the most acclaimed movies of all time will premiere on September 13th with a 70th anniversary collector's edition. Many have said that it is the best American movie ever made and the American Film Institute declared it as the #1 film of all time.It would be nominated for 9 Oscars and would go on to win for best original screenplay.

Warner Home Video is going back to the original nitrate for a hi-definition restoration in 4K resolution.

"The work to re-create the original look of the film and to clean up the effects of aging was a painstaking, frame-by-frame process," said Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging colorist Janet Wilson in a statement.

The collector's edition will come with a 48-page book part of which will be a 20-page reproduction of the original 1941 souvenir program, lobby cards plus facsimiles of memos and correspondence made during the movie's production.

The 70th anniversary edition will also be released via iTunes, On Demand, VUDU and Amazon Instant Video.

"The Black Power Mixtape" set to get a Theatrical Release

A few months back there was the mention of a Swedish filmmaker Goran Hugo Olsson who was putting together a film titled, The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 . The project was definitely stirring up a lot of conversation especially on whether or not this film would truly see the light of day. However, the documentary premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and was recently picked up for distribution by Sundance Selects.

From 1967 to 1975, fueled by curiosity and naïveté, Swedish journalists traversed the Atlantic Ocean to film the black power movement in America. The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975
Meanwhile, penetrating commentaries from artists and activists influenced by the struggle—like Harry Belafonte, Sonia Sanchez, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, and Professor Robin D. G. Kelley—riff on the range of radical ideas and strategies for liberation. Their insights and the vibrancy of the unearthed footage render the black power movement startlingly immediate and profoundly relevant.
mobilizes a treasure trove of 16mm material, which languished in a basement for 30 years, into an irresistible mosaic of images, music, and narration to chronicle the movement’s evolution. Mesmerizing footage of Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Huey P. Newton, Angela Davis, and Eldridge Cleaver, as well as Black Panther activities, are peppered with B-roll footage of black America. These scenes take on a fresh, global angle through the outsider perspective of the Swedish lens.

According to Shadow and Act it will have a limited release in New York and Los Angeles in mid-September and then not too long after that will it hit more theaters.

So far it has received raving reviews and many are very pleased and anxious for it to make its theatrical debut. Another highlight of the film is that Danny Glover is one of the film's producers, as well as once it hits TV screens it will be on the PBS Independent Lens .

JUNE is Black Music Month

The month of June is a pretty good month I must say, Summer begins, Father's Day, we have made it half way through the year and a favorite of mine it's "Black Music Month"

So in celebration I got a new trailer that has premiered and then 7 (lucky number) potential musical biopic films that may or may not come into fruition.

According to Reuters, there are a few "potential" music biopics in the works...

James Brown: Now this project has been in the works since before his death in 2006 with a script that has already been rewritten. Within a few days of Brown's death, director Spike Lee was already on board. And guess who he had for the lead...Wesley Snipes, welp looks like that project will be delayed.

Sam Cooke: Producer Jody Klein, whose company ABKCO owns the soul singer's recordings and publishing, commissioned the team of Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais ("Across the Universe," "The Commitments") to pen a script. Klein has been taking the finished script to directors for a few months. ABKCO intends to finance the film. Many have already said this could be an Oscar contender. And also in the rumor mill its been said either actor Anthony Mackie or singer Ray Lavender (who said he got the role via Twitter) will play Cooke. Hmmm interesting...

Aretha Franklin: The latest news with this project is that Franklin has secured "financial and creative control", but still no details have been given. On various shows Franklin has expressed that she would like Oscar winner Halle Berry (who declined due to not being able to sing) and Broadway actress Patina Miller to play the lead role. This might be one that turns into a TV movie versus hitting the big screen.

Marvin Gaye: Here is a biopic that may not be a top dollar winner, they way that it should be. As reported by Screen Daily this past February British doc filmmaker Julien Temple (Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten) would tackle the story of Gaye recording his final album, "Midnight Love," in Brussels, as well as his friendship with the Belgian promoter Freddy Cousaert. This sounds more like a film festival flick and not so much a big Hollywood screen movie.

Bob Marley: Director Jenny Ash is developing a film based on Marley's year in London, 1977, theoretically circumventing the need for Marley recordings. Greenacre Films is producing. However without the blessings from the Marley estate, its going to be extremely difficult to get a distributor to jump on board. No music...no film simple as that.

Tupac Shakur: This is film is pretty much close to be a definite film in the works with Antoine Fuqua directing through Morgan Creek production and 2Pac's mother, Afeni Shakur-Davis, serving as executive producer.I can see a lot of potential with this potential film especially if they take an interest in his early life. Now if they can just get a lead it will be all good.

Nina Simone: Now this is a biopic I am anxious to see. And at least with this one the lead role has been set and finalized, Mary J. Blige is on board to play the prolific Nina Simone. Written by Cynthia Mort, the movie has actually been put off for years just last year, it was sold, financed, and will begin shooting in the fall.“I’m definitely still doing it and I’m in acting classes for it now. We start shooting at the end of the month!” the Blige told BET.com.

Next is the feature trailer of Jaime Foxx presents Thunder Soul. "It was the 70's and Conrad 'Prof' Johnson turned an inner-city Houston high school band into a legendary funk powerhouse. 35 years later, his students prepare to pay tribute to the man who changed their lives."

Winnie Mandela NOT approving movie biopic AND Jennifer Hudson playing her!!

In interesting and controversial film news...

In a recent interview with CNN's Nadia Bilchik, activist Winnie expressed her concerns and disapproval for the upcoming Winnie film starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson.

"I have absolutely nothing against Jennifer, but I have everything against the movie itself," she told Bilchik, stating that she was not consulted about the movie. Keeping in mind, "this is Hollywood", so it is not all that surprising since when are expectations met these days.

This controversy has stemmed from numerous issues, one being the fact that they cast an American to portray Ms. Mandela (I am quite sure there were several other actresses from Africa that could have played this role...Anyone from the film Hotel Rwanda just to get the ball started...). Also Mandela attempted to block the movie from ever being made with legal action, citing she wanted to see the script to determine how accurate it is to the real life. And lastly, Hudson has never met Mandela, even though she has tried, film producers though it was not necessary since they wanted to stay as true to the book and script as possible.

Hmmm very interesting and somewhat suspect...

I can definitely understand her frustration and reasons for insult, why would they not want her input? It just seems as though that would have been part of the territory. But I guess the movie producer's did not feel the same way.

Here are Winnie's thoughts via CNN...

The movie is based on the book, 'Winnie Mandela: A Life.' The film hits theaters later this year.

Happy Birthday Prince!!

In honor of "The Artist" birthday I definitely wanted to showcase his award-winning flick, Purple Rain. The birthday boy would make his film debut in this movie, which would hone in and at the same time showcase his extreme talents. Here was a film that was created during Prince's Triple Threat tour, and he probably never thought it would become the classic that it is today. Initially Warner Brothers was hesitant to consider the film at the time, but music industry PR Howard Bloom would change all of that and get the film distributed.

The soundtrack with the same name would include three hit singles "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry", and "Purple Rain". Purple Rain would end up winning an Academy Award for Best Original Score and take note, this would be the last time this award has been given.Watching Purple Rain you can't help but recognize the power that this film possesses. It is able to transcend, transform and uplift through the music. Because when you think about it this movie is not about the acting, it's clearly about the music! The music takes on this role of good versus evil and plays out on the screen.

All in all, Purple Rain would become an instant cult classic. This is truly an ode to the 80's so you can guarantee that it will forever be in the history books.

Happy 53rd Birthday Prince!!

So let's party like it's 1999!!

Jungle Fever Turns 20!!

Special shout-out is in store for today. June 7th, 2011 marks the 20th Anniversary of the premiere of Spike Lee's drama film Jungle Fever. And to celebrate I just wanted to give my small little two cents in about this remarkable film. I can remember when this film came out I was an 8th grader at Jefferson Middle School and even then I was definitely impacted.

Jungle Fever is the quintessential film about interracial relationships. And right from the jump, Lee takes us there...Before the opening credits begin, a dedication to Yusuf Hawkins is shown, Hawkins was killed August 23, 1989 in Besonhurst, New York, by neighborhood folks who believed the youth was involved with a white girl in the neighborhood. When in fact, Hawkins was actually in the neighborhood to inquire about a used car for sale in the area.

I must admit Jungle Fever is definitely one of Spike Lee's better films (Along with Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Inside Man, etc.). It brings a lot of energy, happiness, some sadness, a touch of humor, all full-circle with a powerful message. There is a mixture and somewhat odd chemistry between the issues of race, parental & intimate relationships, and sexual myths. Jungle Fever, is a film that pretty much answers the critics question as well as introduce new ones to the forefront.

Jungle Fever would also a gateway for actresses Halle Berry and Queen Latifah as this is both of their's first big screen appearance. Also Samuel L. Jackson pretty much steals the show with his character "Gator".

Now some of the major highlights of this film include in 1991, Jungle Fever would be awarded the "Prize of the Ecumenical Jury" (Special Mention) at the Cannes Film Festival. It would also win the "Human Rights Award" by the Political Film Society, very well-deserved.

First Class Treatment in "X-Men: First Class"

Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN. ~20th Century Fox

I must admit that I am a huge fan of the X-Men comics, and although there have been several films that have come out in the previous years none have quite satisfied the yearning for a good quality X-Men flick. But this weekend with the premiere of the X-Men: First Class movie we do not have to wait any longer. The comic book film we have so needed has arrived!! It had been said back in 2007 right after the release of X-Men: The Last Stand, how would they make a spin-off of the X-Men series that no one would expect. Why not make a film that looks at these characters during their youth, thus we have the inception of X-Men: First Class. We finally get a smart blockbuster hit for the summer! A genius of an idea!

Director Matthew Vaughn is brilliant with his efforts to keep the audience engaged with this film. He gave us the total package from beginning to end. Although the film is set in the 1960's there is a still a modern look with a retro twist. And the fact that it was dated during that time the special effects are actually quite fitting, which is to be expected. When watching this film there is this constant energy that seems to resonate via the plot, its characters, and the music. Going into this film you have to separate yourself from the first three X-Men films and go in with a clear mind. This way you have a clean slate and can actually get an accurate interpretation of the comic book series. If you are a fan of the Batman prequels then this will definitely be right up your alley, trust me!

This film examines some of the other X-Men characters that we have not seen in some of the previous X-Men films and at the same time takes us on a journey. We get to see these mutants at a tender young age evolve into young adults. This is a plus because if you don't read comics your scope of X-Men characters might be very narrow. It's important that we know how these mutants came about to be the great individuals that they are today. There powers did not just manifest overnight, they were trained and built from the ground up. Now some interesting perks from the film were that we got a chance to see the actual recruiting process from its inception, plus some cameo appearances from a young Ororo (Storm), Wolverine (Logan), an older Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) and others.

McAvoy and Fassbender work exceptionally well together as Professor X and Magneto, you can tell that each have a level of respect for the other, they just choose to take different routes. Both together have a very realistic chemistry that is quite intriguing. Emma Frost (January Jones) and Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon add a evil flair that just heightens the film 20 notches. Their relationship is curiously enticing. One small gripe is that you feel like the movie could have given us just a little more, but maybe that was the intention. It leaves some room to desire and want more. An additional minor flaw is that of Mystique's character her personality doesn't seem quite fluid, her motives seem somewhat blotchy (its easier to understand after watching the film.) In addition, to the above characters we also get a chance to be introduced (and some re-introduced) to a few more breakthrough performances from folks Havok, Banshee, Angel, and Beast (who gives us a bit of a vulnerable, softer side). The complete cast, does an excellent job with each of their portrayal. Very believable and very accurate.

What I really like about this film is that we get a solid foundation of how the X-Men became the "X-Men". With "First Class" the story along with the characters in it have more life to them, we can see more dimensions versus just a one-sided viewpoint. In the previous films the personality is lacking whereas now the personalities truly blossom. 'First Class' does darn near perfect job of intertwining the story of the mutants along with actual historical events (Cold War & the Cuban missile crisis). And the central theme that is made very clear is that Erik feels that regardless of how much the mutants assist in saving the world, normal people will always see them as enemies. And Charles still holds on to the notion that there is still some good in people. With that said the groundwork is built for the X-Men movies that we have seen before this one. We also get a deeper look into the relationship between Charles (Professor X) and Eric (Magneto) and the eventual birth of X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. Even though the mutants parted ways in essence they still are on the same, just taking different methods.

After watching this film, I can understand more and more how Marvel creator Stan Lee used Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X as a basis for the Professor X and Magneto characters. The actions, the principles, the values/beliefs, just about everything can be seen in Martin and Malcolm. Much like those in the civil rights movement the mutants were in the same equal rights struggle, while at the same time still trying to shape themselves in the midst of their youth. Ok that was my historical connection/soapbox moment.

I can appreciate a prequel such as X-Men: First Class, maybe with this film, future X-Men flicks can take this same approach...fresh and new!! Bringing in a new set of fresh face actors and a new storyline gives a renewed look and the monotony that we have already seen can be broken. When it is all said and done there is a mutant, hero, anti-hero in all of us, we just have to decide which side we will fight on in the end. All of those new elements along with a great soundtrack make for an outstanding film! Definitely check it out folks, its worth it!!

Sneek Peek: According to Deadline.com 20th Century Fox already has envisioned that X-Men: First Class is the first of new film trilogy.

Rating: 4 out 5 stars

Official Trailer "Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest".

Just released on yesterday via Yahoo! Movies the official trailer to the upcoming summer flick, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest.

Check it out...

I am actually pretty amped about this film, with all the drama that has been surrounding it, we finally get to see the finished work!!

Hits theaters July 8th, 2011.

Remembering a True Soldier for the cause through film...

As many of you may know the world lost a great soldier on yesterday, Borther Geronimo Ji Jaga Pratt. And being that he was a legendary man and former Minister of Defense for the Black Panther Party, I wanted to showcase and highlight two films the 1995 Mario Van Peebles directed film Panther & and most recently 41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers (Pratt was featured in this film).

Panther (1995)
I remember this film very well as I was getting ready to be a freshman in high school. I truly believed this helped to shape the person who I am today. After watching a movie such as Panther at age 14/15 your way of thinking truly opens up.

Director Mario Van Peebles took a bold movie using his father's novel and bringing it to the big screen. One could say that this is stepping stone for the viewer to learn about this inspiring organization. And with an excellent cast (Kadeem Hardison, Bokeem Woodbine, Courtney B. Vance, Jenifer Lewis, Roger Guenveur, and many others) this historical depiction is truly brought to light. Despite some of the flaws I think is it balanced out to where it motivates you to want to seek further knowledge. And I cannot forget the excellent soundtrack, in particular the lead son song "Freedom".

Panther does a pretty good job in making you feel uncomfortable but not in a bad way. It is meant to confront the audience with the struggles and then appreciate their efforts. For a Hollywood film it did not do a bad job. (This is a movie and not a documentary.) Keep in mind this is a dramatized account of the Black Panther Party story. I'd like to think that another viewpoint was presented to the viewer, and ultimately one message was very clear when a people come together on one accord amazing things can happen.

41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers (2010)
Here is a two part documentary series by filmmaker Gregory Everett, which was featured as the 2010 Centerpiece Presentation at the Pan African Film and Arts Festival, which follows the Southern California Chapter of the Black Panther Party from its high road beginnings of Black Power through its tragic end (demise). I actually had the pleasure of viewing this film at last year's National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, GA.along with a panel of distinguished guests.

This is a documentary that revisits the mentality of the Black Panthers and reiterates the fact that there will always be room for improving one's self especially when it benefits the community. "41st & Central" gives a portrayal  for future generations to look at and see how they can carry on the legacy. With today's society glorifying gangs, violence, and crime, the world needs something like this as a wake-up call. The youth of today could get a great history lesson after watching this documentary, I know I did. 41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers explores the Black Panther ethos, its conflict with the L.A.P.D. and the US Organization, as well as the events that shaped the complicated and often contradictory legacy of the L.A. chapter.

Here is a movie that accurately depicted the true message of the Black Panther Party. To be quite honest is very thought-provoking and riveting. This was a time when Black Americans were feeling very confident in expressing their thoughts and beliefs on self-defense. Featured in this documentary are former Black Panther members Ericka Huggins, Roland & Ronald Freeman, Wayne Pharr, Jeffrey Everett, Long John Washington, Muhammad Mubarak, former L.A.P.D. Chief Bernard Parks, US Organization member Wesley Kabaila, U.C.L.A. Professor Scot Brown, and many others.

Brother Pratt, who was 63, was living in Tanzania at the time of his passing. RIP
