Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (cult actors Noonan and Woronov) are the older couple who lure Sam out to their creeky Victorian mansion deep in the woods, just in time for a total lunar eclipse. Megan (Greta Gerwig) is Sam’s best friend, who gives her a ride out to the house, and reluctantly leaves her there despite suspecting that something is amiss. Victor (A.J. Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloody fight for her life...

Rewind Wednesday: Halloween Edition

With Halloween right around the corner, it would be right if I didn't do a double feature on two classic scary/horror flicks. I figure I give you one that has a little bit of the guts & gore, and then one that truly was scary with such ease. First up is that of the 1988 horror film Child's Play.

After 6-year-old Andy Barclays (Alex Vincent) babysitter is violently pushed out of a window to her death, nobody believes him when he says that Chucky, his new birthday doll, did it! Until things start going terribly wrongdead wrong. And when an ensuing rampage of gruesome murders lead a detective (Chris Sarandon) back to the same toy, he discovers that the real terror has just begunthe deranged doll has plans to transfer his evil spirit into a living human being - young Andy!

Critical reviews were very positive, with Roger Ebert calling it "an effective horror film." Child's Play is a movie that probably succeeded because it was in the right place at the right time.

And second is that of the classic technicolor (black and white...for those that didn't have a color tv...lol) horror film, The Birds.

The story begins as an innocuous romantic triangle involving wealthy, spoiled Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), and schoolteacher Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette). The human story begins in a San Francisco pet shop and culminates at the home of Mitch's mother (Jessica Tandy) at Bodega Bay, where the characters' sense of security is slowly eroded by the curious behavior of the birds in the area. At first, it's no more than a sea gull swooping down and pecking at Melanie's head. Things take a truly ugly turn when hundreds of birds converge on a children's party. There is never an explanation as to why the birds have run amok, but once the onslaught begins, there's virtually no letup.

And the Saga Continues...

Well the Saw series has done it again. I must admit this is a very good stream of films, the fact that it connects one after the other makes you want to get more and more involved with the series.

Saw VI concludes the second trilogy of the Saw series that focuses on the post-death effects of the Jigsaw Killer and his successor, Mark Hoffman. Hoffman sets up a new trap for an insurance executive while the FBI trails the last living Jigsaw accomplice suspect, Peter Strahm. The film's plot has a heavy emphasis on the present day economic struggle of the government attempting to regulate Healthcare in the United States. (Very Smart and clever).

For anyone who has seen the previous five and still had some questions this definitely helps to answer, and at the same time bridge any gaps that may have occurred. Keep in mind the normal violence and gore that Saw has brought to us continues, but at least with this one the plot is a bit more through, in addition to great character development is attached. True fans will appreciate the fact that it does not let you down with the suspense, the action, and of course the "games".

This by far is the best one and that should be expected considering the series should get better with each one. And the ending twist AND scene... put it like this if you thought Agent Straham had the powerful WILL to live just wait till you see the survivors in this one. Saw VI is not only just a good sequel but its actual a great movie on its own. Just keep in mind folks there are three more left of these so stay tuned! Its kind of like the Lord of the Ring series, just longer, you know there is something coming next.

As far as I'm concerned, they can just keep making Saw, as I'll always be there, watching.

Rewind Wenesday: The Last Boy Scout

Today's Rewind Wednesday feature, The Last Boy Scout was recommended by a fellow blogger RemarkableFashion. It came on TVOne last night and I just couldn't help but showcase it on today.

The Last Boy Scout is a 1991 action film starring Bruce Willis as a former Secret Service agent, now working as a private detective, and Damon Wayans as a retired professional football player. The two join forces to solve the murder of Wayans' character’s girlfriend (played by the then-little known Halle Berry). The movie was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Geffen Pictures and directed by Tony Scott.

Bruce Willis stars as Joe Hallenbeck, who was once a top-of-the-line Secret Service agent but has since become an alcoholic, flea-bag detective. While performing the chores of a two-bit shamus, he discovers his wife Sarah (Chelsea Field) is having an affair with his best friend. Joe is hired to protect Cory (Halle Berry), a stripper who has been getting death threats; Joe begins to sober up when Cory is blown to smithereens. Cory's boyfriend, Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans), was at one time a NFL football quarterback, but was thrown out of the game for gambling and addiction to Demerol. Smelling something fishy, Joe and Jimmy begin to investigate further and discover layers of corruption in professional football circles, leading up to Sheldon Marcone (Noble Willingham), a corrupt team owner who wants to pay off legislators to legalize gambling on pro football games. (All Movie Guide)

This is one of those movies that makes you enjoy the action-team effort that it presents. Willis and Wayans do an excellent job of keeping us entertained and at the same time giving us some great action.

Now if there is a film-goer alive whose mouth didn't gape in amusement at this opening scene then I am truly shocked and amazed. Take a look for yourself:

Just some good excitement in one film.

A Timeless Children's Classic

How many of you remember Maurice Sendak's classic book "Where The Wild Things Are", well now it has become a big screen flick. This is a story that can be shared and passed down to every generation.

To be honest I was not sure what to expect about this film. When I first saw the preview it didn't really move me into wanting to really see, however as time passed I became more an more interested in wanting to see it. Now mind you I read the book as a child and remember the story, but something just didn't click.

The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitve boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the wild things are. Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and and unpredictable as their actions.

Many people learn to cope with life's troubles in their own way, and Max does so by becoming a wild thing. The brillance of this film is that all of Max's collected experiences regarding his family and his surroundings can be seen and understood represented within a bunch of "Wild Things". Everything about Max, indeed, is split among all of them: Carol, KW, Douglas, Ira, Alexander, they're all Max, and yet because of their split pieces but in turn they're never fully whole either. As soon as you can open up yourself to these "wild things", not just huge animatronics, your whole emotional core of the film truly opens up.

The movie is rated PG, but I will say that its dark overtones could be a bit much for really young children. Now I know some folks may think this is a kid movie, but truly it is for adults, because in the reality of it all "it's really about *us*". Trust me it can work wonders for us "big people". LOL

Just remember this, "There's one in all of us."

DVD's set to hit shelves on 10/20/2009

Here is a list of DVD's set to hit the shelves on tomorrow October 20, 2009. Pretty short list this week, but I will definitely copping the first one.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13)
The Crew (R)

Stay tuned next week.

This might be the next Hitchcock!!

Let me first start out by saying that I have been following this film since its inception and I was definitely excited to go and see it. It has been a while since F. Gary Gray has put something out and this was definitely a movie to put him back on the movie map.

Law Abiding Citizen is your typical "cat and mouse" game-type movie. "Do this or this will happen" type feel. This movie really is true piece of work. The focus is on a father Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) who gets beaten and ends up witnessing the death of his wife and daughter who are killed by 2 crooks. However the crooks' punishment is dimmed down because of a deal made by the Assistant DA Nick Rice(Jamie Fox) and his team of attorneys. Thus 10 years later, Clyde decides to take matters into his own hands by clearing out the entire corrupt justice system.

There is a solid performance between Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, they work perfectly against each other. In essence, they pretty much feed off of the other to showcase a convincing thriller. Perhaps this movie portrays a message that will persuade some real change in the current legal practices. Gray definitely has a way shooting the film so that it accents the sound effects therefore making it an intense movie. Put it like this, Law Abiding Citizen, does a beautiful job of filming in a noir tone with excellent timing on the stunts and effects. I have always been a fan of him and this just proves even more how great of a director Gray is to the movie world!

This is a movie that will constantly keep you guessing as to what the next move will be. Every scene you will be wondering what will happen next, because you honestly won't know. The smallest key detail is important from beginning to end. Think of Clyde as the Joker or maybe even the Riddler, ruthless and dirty but smart and clever at the same time. At first you think he (Clyde) is right, but then he goes too far and just becomes another sociopathic criminal. Jamie Foxx (Nick Rice) does a superb job of trying to outsmart his adversary and by doing so, he learns a major lesson, "don't make deals with murders!!" Throughout the movie you will find there are moments when the villian is the hero and the hero is the villain, and then the "a-ha" moment is trying to figure who is who?

In the end one might wonder, should we all take justice into our own hands...

Bryan Singer Says He's Interested in Making Another X-Men movie

According to the Associated Press, director Bryan Singer has expressed an interest in making another X-Men movie.

The American director made X-Men and X2: X-Men United, but passed on the third installment so he could make Superman Returns. "I'm still looking to possibly returning to the 'X-Men' franchise. I've been talking to Fox about it," Singer said at a talk at South Korea's Pusan International Film Festival.

Singer said he enjoyed making science fiction and fantasy movies because they allowed him to discuss serious issues through entertainment. He said the X-Men series, which follows a group of mutants with superpowers who struggle to fit in with humans, is about tolerance and social structures.

He said he likes to "trick audiences into thinking they're seeing fireworks, but they're learning about themselves and listening to what I have to say."

Eddie Murphy Drops out of Richard Pryor Biopic

As many know, Eddie Murphy has always credited Richard Pryor as being his inspiration for getting into comedy. He pretty much did a perfect imitation of him in his concert film Raw, and even casted him in his directorial effort Harlem Nights. So it was just seem natural that he would star in the film about his idol's life.

So it was a big shock when Entertainment Weekly broke the story last week that Murphy was dropping out of the Pryor biopic. The movie, called "Richard Pryor: Is it Something I Said," will be written and directed by Bill Condon. Condon was also behind Dreamgirls, the 2006 musical that earned Murphy his only Oscar nomination. According to the report, Murphy left over conflicts with the project's original studio, Paramount Pictures.

Even more surprising is the identity of the star who is stepping into the role of Pryor: Marlon Wayans. EW.com reports that Wayans filmed a 13-minute screen test where he "transforms into Pryor" that secured the role for him.

While the movie will obviously have its share of comedy -- its producers include Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, along with Pryor's widow Jennifer Lee Pryor -- it will also tell the dramatic story of the comic's battles with drug addiction. There is no word yet if it goes into Pryor's later years when he was confined to a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis. The film is set to begin shooting in the spring.

Rewind Wednesday: Waiting to Exhale

"Friends are the people who let you be yourself... and never let you forget it."

How many of you remember back in 1995 when the movie Waiting to Exhale debuted? I was just starting high school and all the guys were saying "not another male-bashing movie". But the innteresting thing about it was that a male (Forest Whitaker) directed which might make go hmmmm...it sure did for me. It was a pleasant surprise to see a male take on the role of an all-female cast. It should also be noted that this movie is notable for having an all-black cast. The success of the film proved that there is an audience for black movies. The LA Times called it a "social phenomenon".

The movie was adapted from the novel of the same name by Terry McMillan. Its story centers on four female friends living in the Phoenix, Arizona area and their relationships with men and one another. All of them are "holding their breath" until the day they can feel comfortable in a committed relationship with a man. Thus being able to "exhale"!

It features a nice ensemble that manages to have good chemistry while also allowing certain performers to step into the limelight and really dominate certain scenes. As someone who has read the book and seen the movie, think there is a great correlation between the two. Pretty much any film whether black or white could attest to this film in some sort of way. This movie is filled with sweet moments, great laughter, and maybe some tears. Just a wonderful movie that shows what friendship is about. I also believe it show great strength as strong women taking a stand for themselves to pull themselves together and stay strong and realize they have the ability to make themselves happy no matter the situation they are in. And not to forget, there is a fabulous soundtrack that accompanies this great film.

This is one of those films that has become a classic for me especially in Black Cinema, everytime time it comes on tv I can't help but watch it, even though I have the DVD...lol

Couples Retreat (2009)

"It may be paradise... but it's no vacation."

Couples Retreat is a movie I recommend every couple to see for two main reasons, one the obvious it pure enetertainment but also it gives a alot of advice and tips that can be very informative.

I liked the fact of how it dealt with the very real trauma of a disintegrating relationship. Couples Retreat takes the high road by providing the audience with comic imagery and dialogue to offset the devastating and bitter arguments. This movie does an excellent job of not shying away from hiding the truth of the pain and hurt feelings these characters go through, but they tend to not over accentuate these moments for the sake of staying within the realm of comedy.

In the grand scheme of things, one can appreciate the comedy, because at the end of the day, you just want to be entertained at the movies, and watching characters yell and put each other down in a comedy, as well as other ridiculous things is not anyone's definition of a comedy

But all in all, the laughs come constantly, but at the same time there are a few scenes that make you think of your relationship and how you might be able to make it better.

Good Hair...Good Food for the Soul

Let me start out by saying PLEASE GO SEE THIS MOVIE!! It is definitely worth every penny that is spent.

According to Chris Rock, he was prompted to make the movie after his 5-year old daughter, Lola, asked him, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" During his quest for knowledge, Chris Rock delves into the $9 billion black hair industry, and visits such places as beauty salons, barbershops, conventions, scientific laboratories (to learn the science behind chemical relaxers that straighten hair), and India, where many of the hair weaves worn by African American women are from. Chris Rock explains that the movie retains a sense of seriousness, yet at the same time remains humorous. The movie features celebrities like Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven-Symone, Maya Angelou, KRS-One, Salt-n-Pepa, Eve, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Meagan Good as they talk about some of their own experiences with their hair, and how black hair is perceived in the black community.

This is definitely one of those movies that is perfect for the young and old and even those who are not African Americans. Good Hair could have easily when crashing down in flames, BUT it was able to inform, educate, and still be likable and funny all at the same time.

The one thing I like about this movie was that he used REAL people, not just speculation and internet facts. This gave the film more of an original feel. One is more likely to believe something if it comes "straight from the horses mouth". As a viewer, you get a chance to see and witness the good, the bad, and the ugly, but all at the same gain new insight. There are even moments where you want to reach out and really touch the folks because they are one-sided as to what "good hair" is in today's society. But one cannot be mad about that, it just becomes a teachable moment.

Chris Rock was able to venture into the world of "hair" particuarly African American hair and give us a window of opportunity. After watching this fillm you will have a greater knowledge of this $9 BILLION empire called HAIR!! He does more than just talk about "black hair" but he gives you a background, a history lesson, a microscopic view of the impact that it has internationally.

Trust me when I tell you will learn so much after leaving this movie!! Very Impressive!

Rewind Wednesday: Nell

This week I had a day off and I was watching HBO and a movie came on that I had not seen in a loooooong time!! How many of you remember the movie Nell, well after today you will!

"Her heart. Her soul. Her language are a mystery...A mystery called Nell."

Nell is a 1994 drama film starring Jodie Foster as a young woman who has to face other people for the first time after being raised by her mother in an isolated cabin.

Nell Kellty's mother was paralyzed on one side, which contributed to the oddity of Nell's speech. She and her mother live in an isolated cabin in the mountains of extreme Western North Carolina. Technically, because she lives in a house, cooks her food, wears clothing and performs routine household tasks, she is not a "wild child" or feral child. She seems like one to outsiders at first, because of her terror of strangers, her ritualistic behaviors, and her unintelligible, idiosyncratic language. This language is made up of English-like phrases that are a blend of stroke-impaired speech and twin language.

Once Nell’s mother dies, she is confronted by the outside world through Dr. Jerome Lovell (Liam Neeson) and Dr. Paula Olsen (Natasha Richardson). When Lovell goes there to declare her mother dead, Nell screams and fights, but gradually adjusts to his presence as he visits more and more often. Unsure what to do, he talks to psychologist Paula Olsen in Charlotte, who wants to bring Nell to a laboratory for tests. When Lovell fights this in the courts, he and Olsen are given three months to observe Nell in her own home; when this period of observation ends, the judge will rule on Nell's fate.

This is one of those films that although it is a drama, its a film that gives a humanistic message to its viewers. So often human behavior is ignored, belitted, or barely even recognized but this film sheds light on true human nature. "The most outstanding feature of the film is Jodie Foster's performance in the title role- a remarkable one even by the standards of this talented actress. Throughout the film Foster speaks only in Nell's unearthly-sounding private language, but is able to use this, together with gestures and facial expressions, to convey a full range of emotions."

The "hook, line and sinker" of this film is its power is not shown as an obvious 'message' but more so in a deeply poetic and spiritual tone. There are three central characters (Nell, Jerry, and Paula) and the exquisite photography of the North Carolina landscapes that bring this movie to life. After watching this one will draw several different conclusions- "some may see it, for example, as a religious allegory about the redeeming power of love, while others may view it in a more literal way.
Nell is by far one of the finest and most powerful films of the nineties.

Just in case you missed the extended trailer for the new 2012 movie here it is:

All I can say is wow!!

BREAKING NEWS!!! Transformers 3 HAS BEEN CONFIRMED!!

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!! Transformers is coming back for a third installment AND.....wait for it...Michael Bay is coming back to shoot the third film (He announced this on Thursday). The new Transformers film is set to showcase in theaters exactly one year to July 1, 2011.

Stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are slated to return to the Paramount/DreamWorks project, as is Ehren Kruger, the co-writer of this year's hit sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Bay wrote on his Web site that he met with George Lucas' ILM effects house in San Francisco Thursday morning, and then flew with Kruger to talk new characters with Hasbro executives in Rhode Island. "Well, it's official: We have a great 'Transformers 3' story," Bay said on his Web site. "Today is Day One."

I knew that it was not going to let another opportunity pass by to make billions of dollars! The first two were just too good for Bay to let go and pass on to someone else. He is the man for the job no doubt about it. I am excited about the third installment and will be patiently waiting!!

*Seems like it will be a GRAND year for Paramount/Dreamworks in 2011...Paramount's summer 2011 is shaping up to have four tentpoles: Marvel features Thor and First Avenger: Captain America bow May 20 and July 22, respectively. And the DreamWorks Animation sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom hits theaters June 3.

Surrogates (2009)

Another sci-fi, futuristic/thriller type movie that really does not hit the mark. It barely even passes GO so that it can collect $200. Just did not quite get into this film. Surrogates is a 2009 science fiction film, based on the 2005–2006 comic book series of the same name.
People are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates -- sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It's an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don't exist. When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Greer (Willis) discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery. (Touchstone Pictures)

The storyline of this movie falls somewhere around the categories where movies like Blade Runner, Minority Report, and I-Robot belong. On the same lines as the others it talks about how future technologies can affect human life and provide some philosophical point-of-view that is worth pondering on. The idea of technology progressing into and reaching the boundaries that it becomes an abomination of nature. The movie tends to be thought provoking, but does not make it good enough to be worth an entire evening of discussion.

I must admit that the film has a very fast pace but then there comes a point of action when there is very little digression. Within the title crawl you already what surrogates are, what their purpose is and the history of the surrogates. And then on the other hand if the film could have slowed down a bit and discuss more of the mentality behind the process, the audience may have been able to grasp the total package.

Surrogates is the type of film that reminds me of other past films such as The Happening, I Am Legend, and I-Robot. Now the difference between this one and the others is that there really is no "wow factor". You basically are watching it and being slightly entertained. One might say that the film was rushed and over-edited.

All in all, Surrogates is one of those good sci-fi movies that will simply entertain those who are fans of smart sci-fi movies. Action junkies may be a little disappointed though.

Recent News: Jamie Foxx joins "Due Date"

Jamie Foxx is boarding the cast of Due Date, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' latest Todd Phillips comedy.

Foxx joins Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in the road-trip movie about a high-strung father-to-be (Downey) forced to hitch a ride with a college slacker (Galifianakis) to make it to the birth on time. Foxx will play Downey's longtime pal, who once dated his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and secretly keeps in touch with her.

Date begins shooting this fall in Atlanta, New Mexico and Los Angeles.

Oprah and Tyler team up for "Precious"

According to the Associated Press, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry have teamed up to promote the newest flick, Precious. Oprah Winfrey was so taken by Sapphire's novel "Push" that she read it more than once. Yet even though the talk show host has made best-sellers of unknown books, Winfrey didn't think even her staggering influence could make "Push" — the story of an obese, illiterate black teen who suffers unspeakable abuse — something that millions would want to read.

"I would never even think of presenting that book as a book club selection because people would think I had lost my mind," Winfrey said in a recent interview.

So when Winfrey heard producer and director Lee Daniels had adapted Sapphire's book into the acclaimed movie Precious, with an all-star cast including Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and others, she was so impressed that she decided to lend her weighty endorsement to the film by signing on as its executive producer, along with hit filmmaker Tyler Perry.

"Precious" stars unknown actress Gabourey Sidibe as Precious, who endures an abusive mother, an incestuous father and extreme poverty in a journey of redemption. Though Winfrey and Perry acknowledge the subject matter may be too grim for some, they hope their backing will get more people to see the film when it is released nationwide on Nov. 6.
